The Midlothian boys and girls made a strong opening statement to re-affirm they are both the defending Group AAA state cross country champions and not planning on relinquish the title this fall by winning the adidas Cross Country Challenge in Cary, North Carolina on the same course used for Great American and the Nike Cross Southeast Regional. The Midlo girls had three runners under 19 minutes with Kara Dickerson (18:26), Skylar Evans (18:41), and Marie Johnston (18:46). Evans, a 2:11 800 meter performer this past spring, is make a very fast transition into becoming a successful 5K runner in her first season of cross country. The Midlothian boys put their depth on display behind their junior front runners in Sean Willard and Andrew Gorsuch breaking 16 minutes followed by four other teammates under 16:30 in Ryan Peterson, Tyler Timblin, Collin Hahn, and Tommy Mulroy.

Sean McGorty says not so fast Bile with runaway victory

Chantilly junior Sean McGorty like many runners in the Northern Region has experienced being sat on and kicked past the speedy Ahmed Bile of Annandale. McGorty executed a brilliant race strategy on Bile at the Oatlands Invitational to set a blistering pace from the start, which hopefully Bile would not be willing to must himself. Bile had defeated McGorty earlier in the week at the Monroe Parker Invite with a winning time just over 15 minutes on the Burke Lake Park 2.98 mile course. It worked as McGorty had a two second lead on Bile at the mile with a 4:45 split then the margin went to 7 seconds with a 9:55 split for McGorty. McGorty won over his regional rival in the end by 18 seconds with his final time of 15:30 and his teammate Logan Miller closed well to nearly catch the returning Foot Locker All-American Bile (2nd, 15:38) for second with a time of 15:39. The Chantilly boys followed up their stellar opening win at the Monroe Parker Invitational by taking second at Oatlands with 197 points and ahead of previous Northern Region top ranked Oakton (4th, 265 pts). Oakton, ranked #3 in Virginia this past week, raced without one of their top runners in Michael McNamee.

Meet Summary: Colonial Forge used strong performances from their A,B,C relays on both the girls and boys side to take home the team championships on the newly created Braddock Relays course. In the Boy's Race - Robinson, Edison and Lake Braddock were the lead pack for the first few legs, with Colonial Forge biding their time a short distance behind. Forge's 4th leg Brian O'Loughlin made the decisive move to move his team up through the lead pack. Anchor David Pennesi followed with an equally outstanding leg (the two tied for fastest split of the day honors) to put away the race. Robinson showed its strength over the mile and a half distance as they stayed close to or were in the lead throughout the relay. Edison's boys held off Lake Braddock for third. Colonial Forge won the team title based on their wins in the A & B Races and Runner up finish in the C Race.

Lake Braddock, Edison, Stuart and Colonial Forge stayed in contention a short distance behind. Colonial Forge's A and B teams were beginning to move up through the group. On the third leg, Lake Braddock continued to hold the lead with Colonial Forge making a big move to get to 2nd place. West Springfield and Robinson held down third and fourth with Colonial Forge's B team moving to fifth. On the fourth leg, Coloial Forge made a move for the lead at the 1200 meter mark. Lake Braddock Senior Courtney Lawson held her composure and retook the lead, giving Lake Braddock a 30 meter lead heading into the anchor leg. Sophie Chase (Lake Braddock) and Jenna Walker (Colonial Forge) went out hard through the first 500 meters with Chase easing away throughout the course. Walker held strong in 2nd and the Colonial Forge B team continued their impressive run to move up to 3rd overall. West Springfield (missing ace Caroline Alcorta due to a family event) was fourth across the line followed by Robinson. On the strength of their wins in the B & C Relays and a Runner up finish in the A relay, Colonial Forge captured the girl's team title.
