The William and Mary women's cross country team put together a solid performance in the wind and rain Saturday morning, finishing second at the W&M Invitational with 33 team points and four runners in the top 10. Richmond won the three-team event with 22 points, and the Spiders' Jill Prentice was the individual titlist in 17:37.
Leading the way for the Tribe in her first collegiate race was freshman Jess Cygan (Bethlehem, Pa.), who took second overall in 18:13. Lanie Smith (Reston, Va.) was next across for W&M in 18:50 for seventh overall, three seconds ahead of Clarissa Schick (Richmond, Va.) in eighth place. Ninth went to Heather Beichner (Cary, N.C.) in 19:06, and Kristen Dietz (Springfield, Va.) rounded out the scoring in 11th. The top seven was finished off by Katie Buenaga (Greenville, Del.) in 13th, and Christina Lee (Sterling, Va.) in 15th.
William and Mary is back in action in two weeks, racing at the Paul Short Invitational on Sept. 30 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
