National District Meet Day 1 Summary

First event, the girls 2 mile relay, off to a rousing start. Yorktown\'s freshmen anchor Andrea Oaxaca makes up about 40 meters in the race and about 10 of the meters from the last curve on in to just catch Edison anchor Lauren Carman at the line. F.A.T. was actually necessary and put to good use with Yorktown\'s adjusted 4x800 meter time at 10:19.11 and Edison the close second at 10:19.17 with Washington-Lee getting a 2:25 split from anchor Sarah Weber to finish third in 10:23.64. The boys two mile relay was relatively tight for the first half of the race among four teams. Edison broke it open in the second half of the race and set a new district meet record of 8:36.13 (adjusted to 4x800 meter relay time) largely aided by senior Mohammed Yousuf\'s 2:03 anchor split. Stuart claimed the runnerup spot in 8:55.33 and W-L was third in that race as well (9:09.42). Girls field events had Mount Vernon junior Assiatu Williams as the top performer. Williams won the high jump at 5-2 with Yorktown\'s Heather Young second at 5-0 and then later in the evening Williams was the winner in the triple jump (34-4) followed by Edison sophomore Keosha Simonson (33-11.75). Edison\'s Courtney Conley was the long jump winner at 16-2.5 with Mount Vernon\'s Dominique Clark close behind at 15-10.25 while Molly Lewis of Edison won the shot put (31-1) and Mt. Vernon junior Paula Valdez had the lone clearance in the pole vault (7-6). In the boys field events, one meet record was set as Edison senior Devan Clark continued his solid season with an easy win, as expected, in the shot put at 53-11. Clark also chipped in with a second place in the pole vault (10-6) with Yorktown senior Will Harris claiming the victory at 12-6. Edison senior Ed Baldwin vied with his Eagles teamate Clark for top honors Tuesday evening after winning the long jump with a state auto qualifier of 22-1 and taking the boys high jump at 5-8 and then going straight to a potential meet record in the high jump of 6-2.5 and having one very good attempt at that height. Baldwin then finished his night with a second in the triple jump at 42-7.5 with Edison senior Justin Smith the winner with a mark of 43-7 and Eagles sophomore Ademola Titcombe giving Edison a sweep of the top three spots and their third jumper over 40 feet with a big p.r. of 41-4.25.
