Gusy Lacy title up for grabs

FORK UNION, VA -- The Gus Lacy Track Classic's fourth edition figures to be its best team battle yet. While Deep Creek will not be back to defend its title expect a great battle between Atlee, Charlottesville and host Fork Union. On the girls' side the primary contenders should be Manchester, Western Branch and AA power Western Albemarle. However, the field is deep beyond these six teams.

The individual talents this weekend will provide some great match-ups and will also produce some fantastic performances. Leslie Treherne and Marquita Allen headline the girls' portion of the meet, both are Nike All-Americans and both are top seeds in their events. Highlighting the distance events will be the Fanning sisters of Western Albemarle. Tasmin will give the 2:10 barrier a run in the 800 and Jessica will have her hands full in the 3200 with Midlo's Amanda Patterson, with good weather the 11:00 barrier could go down. Angela Johnson of Charlottesville could leave Saturday with a meet record in the 100. Also watch for Jefferson Forest's Cate Jackson in the 1600.

On the boys' side, Anthony Easter, Ray Williams and Ross Bolden will clash in the 400. The theme for the meet however could be "quiet depth" as no fewer than six athletes are entered in the 800 with times under 2:00. Charlottesville features an outstanding mix of sprinting and jumping and they could jump out early on the rest of the teams. However, Atlee features solid performances in nearly every event and they'll be out to avenge their runner-up performances of the last two years. Fork Union will say good- bye to Louisa's Daniel Kane. Kane has run countless races at Fork Union in the last four years and has become a crowd favorite, he will be missed.

For the host team Fork Union, the meet will serve as a farewell to Andrew "Kippy" Keino. Kippy, a student at the school for the past seven years will look to defend his 1600 title and possibly win the event named for his brother Martin, the 3200. Keino has been the runner-up in the 3200 for the last three years. The meet will also be very special to the meet director Winston Brown as his father's team Churchland will compete. Clarence Brown announced several weeks ago that this would be his last season. Over the years, Brown has guided outstanding individual talent in a school not noted for outstanding athletics.
