SCISA series: A talk with Ben Lippen\'s Graham Tribble

scrunners: What do you remember the most from your time at Ben Lippen, as a student and athlete?
tribble: As a student, I\'ll probably remember the fun classes I had and hanging out with friends during school. I\'ll also remember some of the things I learned from teachers that I respected (anything from how and why stuff works to why and if Jesus really died on the cross...a topic worth investigating...its true!). Some of the harder classes kept me up late a good many nights, and I\'ll probably remember that too.

scrunners: How would you rate your performances during the SCISA meet on April 29?
tribble: I thought my performances were terrible last Saturday. Overall, it was a disappointing season. The most important thing for me right now though is not to get too bummed out about it and just simply evaluate what went wrong, make some fixes and move on.

scrunners: What kind of rest are you taking prior to training for college running?
tribble: Around two weeks.

scrunners: Have you seen any type of training schedule for college?
tribble: I think so.

scrunners: If so, how has this changed from high school running?
tribble: Everything is more intense. Regular runs are faster, and the overall volume of training is higher. One cool thing is I will have teammates to work out with daily. For the most part, I have been doing hard workouts by myself since freshman year. This takes its toll on the mind.

scrunners: What do you recommend to high school athletes, to become the best they canin everything?
tribble: Time management is huge. I have tried to get out and meet as many people as possible but at the same time tried to remember when to study hard. Especially on weeknights, it is important to use that time to keep up with school. I decided kind of early on that if I wanted to run fast and do well in school I did not have time for TV. Besides, the more time I studied the more I was able to hang out with friends, which is much better than watching TV alone. I have also overextended myself some in the past and have worn myself down too much. Setting priorities and focusing on getting enough sleep helps this. Another thing I have noticed is that it is important to research your areas of interest. I had no idea that people ran so much when I got into it, but I eventually got the hang of it, improved and enjoyed it. Another crucial thought to remember is DON\'T BE AFRAID TO FAIL. It wasn\'t until before my junior year that I really started to go after things in running without fearing failure.

scrunners: Who do you see coming up in distance running in the SCISA league?
tribble: There are some great and talented young runners. As long as Coach Johnson is at Ben Lippen there will be a good team and individual there. Some other programs are gaining some momentum. The main thing is the goals and expectations of runners should come up some. This has happened some in recent years and hopefully the upward progression will continue.
