Beach District Meet

May 17th & 18th, 2006
Landstown HS - Virginia Beach, VA

Homestanding Landstown swept both the boys and girls titles as both teams won by over 30 point margins in the Beach District Meet. The Landstown boys were led by 800 meter district champion James Soloman with his 1:59.96 win in the event as well as being a member of the surprising winners in the 4x800 meter relay as Landstown crossed the line first in a time of 8:13.35. The throws also benefited Landstown with R.J. Wilson (50\'0.50\"). winning the shot put and Wilson also led two other teammates in Quinton Rainey (3rd, 135\'5\") and Jerome Williams (4th, 135\'4\") in the discus throw with a second place finish at (139\'9\") behind winner Billy Pearce (145\'8\") of Ocean Lakes as Landstown took three of the top four places. Bayside senior Charles Clark had an amazing two-day meet going through two rounds of 100, 200, and 400 meter dashes to win the finals of all three sprint events on the second day in outstanding times of 10.63, 21.49, and 47.49. Clark definitely posted one of the best sprint triples yet in the state this season at Landstown. The Landstown girls looked impressive in the sprints as they nearly swept all of the sprint events in individual and relay action. Landstown sophomore Leah Brown posted a swift time of 12.11, while finishing second to teammate Cierra McGee (24.49) in the 200 meter dash at 24.86. For McGee, the 200 meter dash was her second district title of the meet as the sophomore ran a personal best time of 55.75 in the 400 meter dash. McGee also finished second in the long jump with a mark of 18\'2.50\" as Salem\'s Shamika Kentish had the best mark at 18\'9\". Kentish and Salem blazed a 47.63 clocking in the 4x100 meter relay to deny second place Landstown (51.34) a sweep of the sprint events, but Landstown closed out the meet in reversing the finish order with a 3:56.30 win in the 4x400 meter relay. Salem senior Jahmal Potter swept the hurdles with strong times of 14.57 in the 110 and 38.01 in the 300 meter hurdles despite a stronger challenger in Cox\'s Curtis Mayfield (14.81/39.10) in both events. Potter was also a member of the winning Salem 4x400 as they posted a season best time of 3:20.41 with Landstown close on their heels at 3:20.76. Mayfield won the triple jump with a mark of 44\'9.50\". Cox\'s Eddie Judge doubled with two first place finishes in the 1600 (4:27.83) and 3200 (9:53.66) meter races, while female teammate Jennifer White had possibly even a stronger double with wins in the 1600 (5:18.88) and 800 (2:18.60) meter races. Kellam\'s Jen Healey earned a pair of district titles in the triple jump (37\'2\") and 300 meter hurdles (47.33), while teammate Tara Connor took the 3200 meter run in a time of 11:27.40. Landstown swept both boys and girls shot put with Whitney Etheridge taking the event for the girls with a best throw of 38\'11\".

Brittany Hyter led Osbourn Park as the district\'s most oustanding athlete winning three events with the long jump (17\'10\"), 100 meter hurdles (15.91), and 300 meter hurdles (45.71). Osbourn Park also completed the Cedar Run District triple crown for the year as they won the cross country district title in the fall and indoor title this past winter. Culpeper County won the boys\' title as they picked up 28 points a piece from Jeff Ferris and Thomas Simpson. Ferris won the 110 meter hurdles in 14.59 and finished second to Stonewall Jackson\'s Damien Thigpen (38.96) in an exciting race with Ferris only three hundredths of a second back at 38.99. A similar finish was found in the 200 meter dash with Thigpen winning in 22.46 and Ferris as the district runner-up at 22.71. Simpson finished as a district runner-up in the 110 meter hurdles (15.27) to teammate Ferris and second in the 100 meter dash (11.30). Fauquier\'s Dania Sanford posted a classy time of 55.81 to win a close battle over the other Hyter twin, Bethany (56.06) in the 400 meter dash. Fauquier\'s Grace Loba doubled with two wins in the distance races with the 1600 (5:19.99) and 3200 (11:54.87) as Fauquier faired well in their first year in the AAA district and without a Sarah Bowman caliber athlete as Kaitlyn Vincie completed the distance sweep with a 800 meter winning time of 2:25.24.

The Brooke Point girls ran away with the team title at the Commonwealth District Meet, while the Mountain View boys denied a district crown sweep by Brooke Point. As expected, April Sinkler took all three jumping events for Brooke Point with top marks in the high jump (5\'6\"), long jump (18\'0\"), and triple jump (37\'11\"). Meanwhile, Brooke Point had two individuals on the track pick up two wins each with Jarryd Mushatt-Valrie in the 200 (26.77) and 400 (59.21) meter dashes and Becky Sampson in the 100 (16.40) and 300 (50.21) meter hurdles. Brooke Point also dominated the relays with first place finishes in the 4x100 (49.05) and 4x400 (4:04.71) meter relays as they broke the meet record in the 4x100. The Colonial Forge girls finished second in the team standing as they were led by wins in the distance races by Amy Yocum in the 800 meter run (2:19.40) and Kaylan Comer in the 3200 meter run (11:24.25). Albemarle\'s Rachel Rose ran a personal best time of 5:04.36 to win a hot 1600 meter race with two other runners under 5:10 with Brittany Copeland of Brooke Point (2nd, 5:06.21) and Comer (3rd, 5:06.44) helping to make for a fast race. A mixture of sprints, jumps, and distance led first year school Mountain View to the district title. Mountain View\'s Deshun Whitaker in the 100 meter dash (11.22) and Kevin Harris in the 200 meter dash (22.92) were the team\'s only event winners, but freshmen Thomas Porter\'s two second place finishes in the 1600 (4:23.24) and 3200 (9:35.38) meter races to Colonial Forge\'s Dan Leyh (4:21.24/9:30.08) helped boost their team score of 107 points. Mountain View also finished second in every relay event. Eight points shy of them in second, Brooke Point was led by Mike Garel, freshly coming off his two wins in the hurdles at Southern Track Classic. Garel impressed once again with wins in the 110 (14.85) and 300 (40.03) meter hurdles. Garel also took the triple jump with a best jump of 44\'4.50\". Massaponax\'s Dominique Smith garnered victories in the two throwing events as he edged Brooke Point\'s Andre Gregory (49\'0.50\") in the shot put by one-half of an inch at 49\'1\", while winning the discus throw convincingly at a mark of 160\'5\". Albemarle\'s Anthony Bryant got his groove back in the high jump after going through a slump this outdoor season by clearing a height of 6\'8\" at Colonial Forge. Southern Track champion Blake Arnold of Colonial Forge (1:57.23) pulled just ahead of Stafford\'s Matt Cash (1:57.72) for the 800 meter win. Arnold was a member of the 3:24.84 winning 4x400 meter relay for Colonial Forge, while Cash was a member of the 8:13.96 winning 4x800 meter relay for Stafford.

Dominion District Meet

May 19th, 2006
Manchester HS - Manchester, VA

When one thinks of the Manchester team, one usually thinks of sprints and field events. When one thinks of the Midlothian team, one usually thinks about distance. However, the Dominion District Meet turned out to showcase the Manchester boys and Midlothian girls to be more well rounded than most stereotype the programs to be as both went on to win the district crown. Manchester\'s distance runners could have contributed considerably more points to the team cause if it were not for a disqualification in the 4x800 meter relay in what would have been a 8:13 win. However, Josh Hawes of Manchester won the 800 meter run in a big PR effort of 1:57.47, while teammate Andrew Duty finished third in 2:01.83 after finishing second in the 1600 meter run earlier at 4:31.64. Monacan\'s Brett Hamonds, slow section winner in the 1600 meter run at indoor states, won the race in a time of 4:27.78. Meanwhile, the Midlothian girls got considerable point contributions out of their sprinters as Lynchburg College bound Kyra Richardson won the 100 meter dash (12.75) and 300 meter hurdles (46.65), while finishing second to Huguenot\'s Wanetta Kirby (26.06) in the 200 meter dash at 26.48. Kirby had earlier been defeated by a mere 16 thousandths of a second in the 400 meter dash to fellow Midlothian sprinter Danielle Murray as both runners were timed at 59.99. Midlothian also shut the door on the rest of the district with a 4:08.81 4x400 meter relay win. However, Manchester boys and Midlothian girls were still strong in the areas that they have always been best at. Anthony Chesson paced the Manchester boys as he won the 100 meter dash in a state best time of 10.58, while besting his Southern Track performance in the 200 meter dash with a 21.34 win. Both times broke district meet records, which the 200 meter dash record had stood the test of time since 1988. Chesson also finished third in the 400 meter dash in between the two events at 51.14 with Huguenot sweeping the top two with Brian Lee (50.26) and Jerrod Bailey (50.28). Chesson also won the long jump with a mark of 21\'7\" bettering Clover Hill\'s Jeremy Zdanek (21\'6\") by an inch. In the showdown between two All-Americans and similar top two finish from Southern Track Classic one week ago, Manchester\'s Antonio Miller leaped to a jump of 46\'11\" in the triple jump with Huguenot\'s Matu Bundy in second at 46\'9\". Manchester swept the throwing events as Ryan Stratis won the shot put (52\'3\") and discus throw (131\'3\") for the boys despite windy conditions for the throws, while Jennifer Marinacci pulled in the same two district titles for the girls in the shot put (35\'7\") and discus (126\'1.50\"). The Midlothian girls swept all of the distance events with the 4x800 meter relay, M.C. Miller taking the 1600 (5:06.29) and 800 (2:19.52) meter races, and Erin Stehle finishing first in the 3200 (11:51.15) in the 3200 meter run. Huguenot\'s Kirby not only won the 200 meter dash and finished second in the 400 meter dash, but also won the 100 meter hurdles (15.15), high jump (5\'6\"), and long jump (17\'1.50\") to move her team in second place virtually by herself. Kirby tied the meet record in the high jump. Huguenot also won the 4x100 meter relay (50.27) and relay member Joi Yancey placed first in the triple jump (34\'11.75\"). The Huguenot boys swept all of the relay races with the 4x800 (8:15.19), 4x100 (44.14), and 4x400 (3:25.56) meter relays. 4x800 and 4x400 relay member Bundy scored two individual runner-up finishes in the triple jump and 800 meter run (1:59.56). Huguenot took both hurdle events as well with McArthur Henley in the 110 meter hurdles (14.80) and Robert Evans in the 300 meter hurdles (39.74).

Meanwhile, the Orange County boys similarly got two victories out of Carl Johnson in the 300 meter hurdles (41.77) and 200 meter dash (22.91). Fluvanna County junior Roshell Hill posted an outstanding mark 130\'9\" in what has been an exceptional year for the girls\' discus throw in the state of Virginia. Ashley Early cleared 12 feet in the pole vault, while her Western Albemarle distance teammates helped lead the squad to a second place finish with Valerie Wilder winning both the 1600 (5:17.53) and 800 (2:27.35) meter races. Senior teammate Samantha Stafford finished second in the 1600 in 5:18.33, while doubling back for a 11:48.64 3200 meter win.
