States will be here sooner than you think. Here are our very early predictions prior to the season starting.
He is consistent and fast and this year you can almost guarantee he will be focused on improving from his 12th place finish at Foot Locker a year ago.
Mostly anyone who knows Joe would tell you the same thing, he is a beast.
His personal best is 15:08 and it goes without saying that his goal is to break 15 this season.
While all eyes are on Loudoun Valley this season, don't miss Western Albemarle who have some of the strongest runners in the nation. One of those runners, Jack Eliason, is our fourth ranked runner heading into the cross country season. He enters the season with a personal best of 15:29.
Our number two pre-season runner is Rachel Mudd of Atlee. She enters the season having run 17:44 and with a major title under her belt, the MileStat.com XC Invite. She did however face some injuries since then and that is why she is number two.
She boasts a best of 17:43 in the 5K and did that in the race pictured above at Octoberfest. That time was run on the hilly course at Great Meadow so you can really understand how fast she is.
After four years, the RVA Relays has become one of the most hyped meets of the entire XC Season. This year's installment is not only going to be the biggest and best one yet but it will also feature a glow run race now under the lights!
Our number four returner, like many others on this list, also has an argument to be number one. Bethany Graham though has yet to have the chance to prove herself after two straight years of injuries during XC.
The 5th ranked returner for us is defending Class 5 State Champ Colby Burcham. He enters this XC season now with two state titles and a legacy for being the guy to beat at Great Meadow.
She, more so than anyone else, is going to be the most interesting athlete this cross country season. We will know soon enough at her home course, the Knights Crossing Invite, whether she is ready to defend her 2017 state title.
Returning this season ranked 3rd in the entire state on time is Kellen Hasle
Being a homeschooled athlete means Michaela is unable to run against some of the other top girls in the state but that didn't stop her this outdoor season when she ran a 2:04 state record in the 800.
Entering the 2019 XC season at our preseason #7 is defending Class 4 state champion Ricky Fetterolf. She has a PR of 18:05 and was 8th at NXN-SE last year as well. She alongside her teammate Elise Abbe are the only teammates to both make this list.
When you combine that wining ability with his 15:42 PR you get an athlete who could achieve anything he puts his mind to this season.
Kaitlynn Wolfe is a five-time state champion and cannot ever be counted out.
Winning the Texas Relays and vaulting 14' with the best competition in the country was the absolute highlight of my high school career.
Entering the season ranked 8th in our rankings is Class 5 State (3200) Champ, Jacob Plummer. He enters this XC season having been 3rd last year and with a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finish at states in track over the past year.
Elise Abbe went from a 19:20 sophomore to a 18:08 junior. That tells you exactly why she is our #9 ranked athletes heading into the 2019 cross country season.
One of the most improved athletes last year was L.C. Bird's Brendan Taylor. He is going to be an integral part of their team title pursuit this season so you can guarantee that he and his teammates are going to take training very serious this summer.
She will have tough competition in Loudoun County and at States but she is ready for it.
Coming into the season ranked #10 in the state is St. Chris' Miles Mullins. He did not compete last year for his team but did ultimately run a season best time of 15:45. That time ranks 10th in the entire state amongst returners.
One athlete who had quite the breakout year last year is Lindsey Hester of James River.
Ava Gordon is 100% a name to watch this season. She enters as our #12 ranked athlete preseason and as a potential top five athlete as well. She enters with a personal best of 18:28 in the 5K and 4:59 for the 1600 outdoors.
For the first time, Virginia will have a comprehensive state championships for both cross country and outdoor track. XC will be run in late October and track will be run in late May.
One of the quiet stars of the season is Sophie Tedesco. She may be slowly moving up the leaderboard but she is certainly moving up. That is why she makes our preseason list. We expect a big breakout performance as well this season ahead of her 18:36 personal best.
