@historian Historian: Here's another question. Has there ever been any athlete at the A, AA or AAA level that has won the state championship in 6 events at one time???

@historian You can add Sharon Couch from Amelia County, Single A school, to your list. In the late 1980's she contested 6 events, placed 1st in 5 events breaking state records in 4 of those events, and also placed in the 6th event, a relay to capture 53 points. Couch later went on to compete in 2 World Olympics. More recently you had another girl,Jasmine Mitchell a 10th grader from Amelia County, win the state championship in 3 events (high jump at 5'6", long jump at 17'5.25" and 400 meters in 57.87. Mitchell also placed 2nd in 800 meters and 4th on the 1600 relay team to garner nearly 40 points for her team. Still is there any athlete to win 6 events at the State Championship??? That would be a rare feat!

@siobhan_7526 Looks like five events is the most the AAA athletes could win in one meet. Of course it will be impossible to match Francis Byrd. Eight events. That was the only year that the hammer was contested as an event. The Javelin went out as an event in 1945.

@historian I am by no means saying that it is likely or easy, but why couldn't an athlete win 8 or 9 events. You can do unlimited field events which would be five or six (depending on your district) events and then you can do 3 running events. I can't imagine the same person winning shot, discus, high jump, long jump, triple jump, pole vault, 100, 200, 400 for example.

@coachLC In Virginia with unlimited entry into field events (a VHSL Handbook policy not a National Federation Rule) you could possibly win 6 field events and 3 running events giving you a total of 9 championships in one meet. Francis Byrd back in 1916 with both the hammer and javelin included in the field events could have won 10. We have had some great multi talented athletes throughout Virginia track history and as you can see 5 has been the max as to number of championships they have been able to win in one meet. A few came close to six and some close to seven but fell just a little short.

can you provide information or rankings on hurdlers who have dipped below a sub 14 seconds in the 110 and a sub 37 seconds in the 300 hurdles in the same outdoor season.

@historian Thanks for the info. Really enjoyed hearing the history and interesting tidbits announced on the PDA at the Central Region T&F Championships. Would have been a bonus to hear something similar at the AAA State Meet.

potomac2011 It has only happened at one state meet - 1984 and amazingly two athletes did it. In one of the greatest duals of top hurdlers in Virginia History. 100 Meter Hurdles 13.67 Calvin Holmes of Denbigh 13.78 Patrick Mann of Gar-Field 300 Meter Hurdles 36.50 Patrick Mann of Gar-Field 36.95 Calvin Holmes of Denbigh Rickey Harris of Centreville probably would be on this list but the year he went 13.50 in the 110 Hurdles he opted for the 400 instead of the 300 Hurdles Charles Reid of Salem (VB) was close 13.53 in the 110's but only 37.42 in the 300 Hurdles Doug Dickinson of Newport News and Eric McCaskill of Huntington from the 60's probably would be on this list but they ran 180 Yard Hurdles instead of 330 Yard Hurdles. The same for Bennie McRae of Huntington in the 50's. Before 1971 it was the 180 Yard Hurdles not 330 Yard or 300 Meter Hurdles Before 1947 they ran 42" college high hurdles instead of the 39" hurdles we run today.

@historian one recent perforance comes to mind on the girls side. Shakeela Saunders indoors 2009-2010 state meet. I think she placed 2nd as a team by herself.

@irishrunner2017 Geez man chill out. There's always the possibility it could be the kid's parents or another family member or something. Even if it is him talking in third person who cares.
