Virginia pole vaulters Kathryn Pettine and David Sullivan had record performances this weekend as Pettine set the Virginia outdoor mark and Sullivan tied his own outdoor record en route to a pair of wins at the Fred Hardy Invitational held at the University of Richmond. Pettine became the first Virginia athlete to hit the 11\' 11.75\" mark outdoors while Sullivan\'s 17\' 0.75\" tied his own record that he set last year. Sophomore Amanda Russell ran a 17:07.94 to win the women\'s 5000 meter race Friday at the First Annual Fred Hardy Invitational at the Fred Hardy Track and Field facility on the campus of the University of Richmond. The Spider women garnered seven Top-10 finishes on the day, while sophomore Rusty Burrell led the men with a third-place finish in the high jump with a height of 6-02.75.
The University of Richmond track and field team will host the First Annual Fred Hardy Invitational Friday-Saturday, March 25-26, at the Fred Hardy Track and Field Facility at First Market Stadium on the Richmond campus. The Spiders, who will compete as the event hosts, will welcome 10 teams to the event including Pittsburgh, Virginia, VCU, William & Mary, James Madison, Concord, George Washington, Shippensburg and West Chester. The field will also include several unattached athletes, most notably Samuel Okantey who competed in the triple jump at the 2000 Olympiad in Sydney, Australia. Okantey holds a personal best of 54-11.50 in the event.
