Northern Region Meet 2006

Highlights from the other regional meets that MileStat.com was not on-site at...Northern Region Meet and Northwest Region Meet now posted. Summaries from the other regions to come. NORTHERN REGION MEET Lake Braddock and Westfield girls battled it out all meet long at the Northern Region Meet with Lake Braddock becoming the eventual team champions with 92 points and Westfield taking second four points back at 88. The 4x800 meter relay was a barn burner between the two teams as they posted the state\'s two fastest times with Westfield at 9:14.56 and Lake Braddock at 9:17.74. Lake Braddock had two individual regional champions including Michelle Presley in the 1600 meter run (5:05.31) and Teressa McCoy in the shot put (41-2.75). Aimee Kodat won the discus throw for Westfield with an strong mark of 135-2, while their 4x400 meter relay (4:01.07) was also victorious to conclude the meet. Brittni Finch of Centreville and Nakeisha Wineglass of Hayfield won two events each as Finch took the long jump (19-5.50) and 100 meter dash (12.69), while Wineglass had a similar jumps and sprint double with first place finishes in the triple jump (37-11) and 200 meter dash (25.79). Finch also was featured on the first place Centreville 4x100 meter relay (49.83). Chantilly\'s Nicole Kazuba looks ready to win a second state title in the pole vault after clearing 11-6 to win at the Northern Region Meet. Thomas Jefferson\'s Stephany Reaves and Oakton\'s Kayley Byrne won deep and competitive distance events at Lake Braddock with Reaves winning the 800 meter run in a time of 2:15.66 and Byrne cross the line first in the 3200 meter run at 11:07.51. Hayfield had a regional champion in both hurdle races with Asia Odum in the 100 meter hurdles at 14.87 and Jasmine Jones in the 300 meter hurdles at 44.91. Robert E. Lee\'s Sean Holston is clearly the most dominant sprinter in the Northern Region as he won all three sprints with the 100 (10.99), 200 (21.90), and 400 (48.89) meter dashes. Another impressive individual performance came from Abreham Daganchew\'s distance double victories in the 1600 (4:17.79) and 800 (1:54.57) meter races with the latter race being a close race with Robinson\'s Mark Hussa (1:54.95). Meanwhile, West Springfield junior Mike Spooner geared up for state meet competition by posting one of the state\'s faster times for 3200 meters in a 9:17.43 regional win. James Robinson boys won the team title with 94 1/2 points as they nearly swept the relays with 7:54.85 win in the 4x800 meter relay and top time of 3:21.58 in the 4x400 meter relay, while finishing third in the 4x100 at a 43.41. West Potomac won the sprint relay event in a time of 43.00 as they also finished second in the team standings with 79 points. West Potomac was led by the jumping duo of Antwane Minter and Joshua Rodriguez with Minter winning the long jump at a mark of 23-.7.25, while finishing second in the triple jump (45-7.75). Rodriguez finished second to teammate Minter in the long jump (22-4.25), while placing third in the triple jump (45-4). Indoor state champion Justin Duncan of James Madison won the triple jump with a leap of 46-1. Devan Clark\'s two wins in the throws with a toss of 49-10.50 in the shot put and 161-0 in the discus helped Thomas Edison finished third (74 pts) as a team. Langley junior Jordan Calderwood won both hurdle races with times of 15.03 in the 110 and 39.57 in the 300 meter hurdles. The boys pole vault saw the top four vaulters all tied at 13-6, but Lake Braddock\'s Ian Prohaska won out on the tiebreaker in the event. NORtHWEST REGION MEET Osbourn Park girls and Brooke Point girls were expected top two finishers in the team standings. Osbourn Park girls just missed the 4x400 meet record with a time of 3:56.82. Brittany Hyter swept the hurdles for Osbourn Park (15.62 100H/45.51 300H). Twin sister Bethany won a thilling 400 in 55.16 over Fauquier\'s Dania Sanford (2nd, 55.19) with Potomac\'s Yvonne Amegashie (55.88) also being clocked at 55 seconds in the race. Stonewall Jackson\'s Thelma Breezealt rolled through wins in the 100 (11.94) and 200 (24.27). The girls in the 1600 meter run ate their wheaties in the morning before their race as indoor state runner-up Brittany Copeland of Brooke Point actually finished out of the top six qualifying position in seventh at 5:09 (though she\'s already a state auto qualifier) as Albemarle\'s Rachel Rose finished first in the stacked race with a personal best time of 5:00.91. Brooke Point girls were led by April Sinkler\'s two wins in the high jump (5-8) and triple jump (37-6.50), while finishing second in the triple jump to Brittni Dixon of Woodbridge, who posted a huge personal best mark of 19-5.50. Fellow Woodbridge athlete Arienne Jenkins (41-5) went over 40 feet to win the shot put. Defending indoor state champion E.C. Glass boys (75 pts) took a slim two point margin of victory over Potomac (73 pts) for the team regional crown. Glass senior Mike Zajac continued to throw at top form with a 57-7 performance in the shot put and another 180 plus foot throw in the discus at 182-2. Two relay victories in the 4x800 (8:01.28) and 4x400 (3:23.13) also helped push the Hilltoppers. Chris Harrison led by Potomac with two regional titles in the 100 (10.92) and 400 (48.81), while finishing second in the 200 (21.92) to Shawn Wright of Franklin County (21.90). Potomac also won the 4x100 meter relay without Harrison in a 42.54 clocking. Colonial Forge\'s Dan Leyh had an impressive double in the distance races with two first place finishes in the 1600 (4:17.35) and 3200 (9:22.27). Southern Track champion Mike Garel picked up two more wins in the hurdle events with a 14.40 clocking in the 110 and 39.57 clocking in the 300 meter hurdles. Forest Park sophomore Zack Williams was the lone underclassmen regional champion among the boys in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:56.56.
