NOTES -Courtesy of Pearl Watts)- First time ever that the regional championship was
contested on the current(minor changes through the years) 2.98 mile course at Burke
Lake Park.It also appears that this was the first time that teams with just
individuals in the meet were displaced and the raw score did not reflect the "team"
score.
Splits for George Watts were a "blistering" 4:31 for the first mile and 9:24 at two
miles, before easing off a bit in the third miles; according to the Alexandria Gazette
sportswriter Bill McDowell's article on the meet.
The splits at the Gunston District meet were 4:27-9:27 (14:52 time had been previous
course record); also according to McDowell. Over the years, the two mile mark has
seemed to remain very consistent with numerous people's measuring devices, although
the mile mark has seemed to vary a bit more.
