Leslie Sherman Memorial Invitational 2010

Several state leading performances were recorded on Thursday at West Springfield High School in the first annual Leslie Sherman Memorial Invitational. The invitational was named to honor the former West Springfield runner Leslie Sherman, who was one of the victims in shooting tragedy at Virginia Tech.   Photo by Brandon Miles   A stellar 400 meter showdown between two of the Northern Region's best in Cameron Clive of Mount Vernon and Adrian Vaughan of South Lakes produced the state's fastest two times of the outdoor season with the usual hurdler Clive as the winner at 49.10 and Vaughn in second at 49.39. Vaughn later won the 200 meter dash and anchored the first place 4x400 from South Lakes. Clive won the 100 meter dash earlier in 11.33, while taking fourth in the 200 meter dash against Vaughn to even the tally in the head-to-head matchup.   Photo by Brandon Miles   Thomas Edison's Myah Hicks ran an impressive solo sub 5:10 1600 for a VA #1 5:08.33, while teammate Kristina Brown uncorked a big personal best jump of 36'5" to win the event over McLean's Dominique Graham (36'4"). Graham, the most versatile athlete in the Northern Region and a competitor indoors in the pentathlon at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships, spent her spring break on Thursday by winning the high jump with a state best height of 5'5" and the long jump with a mark of 16'9", while placing a close second to Genamarie McCant in the 200 meter dash.
