Athlete Spotlight: Taylor Clevinger Feb 10, 2011

Photo by Ryan Kelly After initial freshmen year success at Hanover High School including a runner-up sub 2:20 800 meter performance at the Central Region Meet, the momentum did not carry over into Taylor Clevinger's sophomore year as a travel soccer injury in the fall and then another injury from overtraining in the spring hampered her development. After a change in scenery, teammates, and coaches in her transfer to Richmond area private school St. Catherine's during her junior year, Clevinger experienced a revival in her running especially during the 2010 outdoor season with a 2:14 800 meter best which has continued onto this year as a senior running personal bests (including a recent 2:58 1000) and school records (helped set 4x400 record last weekend). The University of Richmond signee prepares for this Saturday's VISAA State Championships as a favorite individually to win state titles in the 1600 and 1000 meter races as well as a key contributor for potentially another St. Catherine's team championship.

Athlete Spotlight: Shantell Bingham Feb 10, 2011

Photo by John Herzog   Shantell Bingham, the Virginia leader in the girls’ 55-meter hurdles, doesn’t see drills simply as a way of training her body. They fine-tune her nervous system. At practice, the Episcopal senior slides hurdles closer together, then drags them farther apart. After getting the barriers set, she jumps over them in an all-out sprint. It’s all in an effort to teach her synapses to fire quicker. She’s processing information so fast now, Episcopal assistant coach George Harris says, that it’s almost instinctive Bingham, who says she’s crashed into plenty of hurdles while doing drills, hopes to be smooth over the barriers at the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Championships Saturday at St. Christopher’s in Richmond.

VISAA State Championships: Liberty Christian boys & St. Catherine's girls win team titles Feb 12, 2011

Duo stars for the St. Catherine's girls and Liberty Christian Academy boys helped lead their squads to state team titles at Saturday's Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Indoor Track & Field Championships in Richmond. Taylor Clevinger and Sarah Katz nearly both won two individual titles each for St. Catherine's with Clevinger as the winner in the 1600 (5:16) and 1000 (3:02), while Katz won the 500 in a personal best time of 1:18.64, while trading wins with Trinity's Jordan Stokes in two events as a close runner-up to her in the 300 at 41.95. Stokes claimed Runner of the the Meet honors with her 41.80 victory in the 300, a runner-up 1:19 effort in the 500, and placing third in the 55 meter dash finals. Episcopal's Shantell Bingham was in a class of her own in dominant runaway victories in the finals of the 55 meter hurdles (8.22) and 55 meter dash (7.12) with her dash time being an all-time best for the state leader in the hurdles. Liberty Christian's Dana Mercer swept the horizontal jumps including a national caliber mark of 18'1" in the long jump.   Cody Bingham soared cleanly over a height of 15'6" in the pole vault, while LCA teammate Demitri Knowles blazed the track surface with his times of 6.47 in the 55 meter dash finals and 35.69 in the 300 meter dash to help secure a state team crown for the Liberty Christian Academy squad. Episcopal senior and Wake Forest bound Reid Nickle impressed in his distance double as he negatively splitted considerably in his 4:29 1600 win and came back later to win a competitive 1000 meter race with Fork Union's Avery Martin and St. Christopher's' Ben Constable in a solid time of 2:33.55. William Miller also helped contribute to a LCA title with first place showing in the 500 meter dash at 1:07.85. More to come from the VISAA State Indoor Championships...   VISAA State Championships Results: Boys - Girls Race Videos & Photos to be added on Sunday

Athlete Spotlight: Ben Constable Feb 17, 2011

Photo by Ryan Kelly    At a school that has become known in recent years for the strength of its relay teams, Ben Constable has emerged as both a critical part of St. Christopher’s’ current four-man relay squads, and a formidable force in his own right in the individual mid-distance events.  The William and Mary bound senior is coming off an impressive triple this weekend at the VISAA Championships, where he posted a 2:00 split on the winning 4x800 team, a 2:34.17 PR in the 1000 good for second place, and finished off with a 51.1 effort, helping his team to second in the 4X400.
