(Saturday, November 19th, 2005, Louisville, Ky.) - The Virginia Intermont College Men\'s Cross-Country team doubled their pleasure Saturday, when they ran to their second consecutive team title, topping runner-up Concordia University (Irvine, Cal.) 52-122. Leading the way for the Cobras was freshman Steeve Gabart (Miami, Florida), running to a 9th place finish of 24:54.65, for the 8,000 meter course. Following Steeve into the finish were junior Pat Marion (Ottawa, Ontario) in 14th place (25:02.70), sophomore Ondrej Puskar (Trnava, Slovakia) in 15th place (25:03.10), freshman Jeremy Cadle (Charlottesville, Va.) in 18th place (25:04.70), and senior James Mousseau (Killdeer, N.D.) in 21st place (25:06.80). The top-5 finishers for VI all earned All-American honors for their top-30 finishes.

USA Track & Field selected Fernando Cabada, a senior at Virginia Intermont College, to Team USA for the 2005 International Chiba Ekiden Relay to be held in Chiba, Japan November 23. In addition to Team USA, the marathon relay will feature teams from Ethiopia, Kenya, Morocco, France and Great Britain.

Saturday morning proved to be a wonderful day of running for the Virginia Intermont College and Club Intermont men\'s and women\'s cross-country teams. Ondrej Puskar, a Virginia Intermont College sophomore from Trnvava, Slovakia is the AAC men\'s cross country Athlete of the Week. Puskar covered the Lehigh Paul Short Invitational 8K course in a blazing 24:44.20. This strong run gives Ondrej the fastest 8K time in the AAC so far this season, and helps solidify his teams number #1 NAIA national ranking.

USA Track & Field has announced the Team USA for the North American 5 km Team Challenge, hosted by the Arturo Barrios Invitational in Chula Vista, Calif., on October 23. The U.S. team will be competing against teams from Canada, the 2004 team champions and Mexico for a total prize purse of $25,000. Each team will be represented by 6 athletes, 3 men and 3 women, scoring the top two times for each sex from each team. The winning team will receive $12,000, second place $6,000 and third $3000.

Chapa runs PB & new state leading 1600 with future VIC teammates in TN Brandon Miles Jul 19, 2005

J.R. Tucker graduate and incoming Virginia Intermont College freshmen Michael Chapa posted a personal best and state leading time of 4:12.98 (converts to 4:11.38 for 1600 meters) as he finished in seventh place in an elite mile race held in Tennessee among collegiate and post-collegiate runners. Chapa, who finished off an outstanding high school career with a state title in the 1600 meter run outdoors, will be headed to Virginia Intermont College in the fall. Virginia Intermont College is the defending NAIA national champions and two of their athletes compete in the Foot Rx Crazy Mile with Chapa in Corey Duquette (4th, 4:12.27) and David Cheromei (8th, 4:13.20).

Virginia Intermont College finds itself in second place with 16 points after the first day of competition at the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships held at Cardinal Park in Louisville, Kentucky. VIC distance star Fernando Cabada was crowned a national champion with his win in the 10,000 meter run as he was clocked in at a time of 29:53.09 as the junior took a narrow victory over Simo Kiplagat (29:54.06) of Lindenwood. Virginia Intermont College sophomore David Cheromei could possibly pick up another ten points for the Cobras in the steeplechase finals as he had the fastest time in the preliminaries on Thursday by 17 seconds with a time of 8:53.56.

Mudasar Haidat, a freshman at Virginia Intermont College, won the Country Music Half Marathon in Nashville, Tn. this weekend, qualifying for the NAIA national championships marathon. Haidat, a native of Arlington, Va., bested a field of nearly 12,000 runners with an automatic qualifying mark of 1:10:05. Haidat, who is also qualified in the 10,000-meters, will compete in the marathon for VIC at the NAIA outdoor track national championships in Louisville, Ky. on May 28th.

Several Virginian collegiates performed exceptionally well at the first annual North America, Central America, and Caribbean Athletic Cross Country Championship. William & Mary freshmen Dave Mock, University of Virginia freshmen Emily Harrison, and Virginia Intermont College junior Fernando Cabada all represented the United States in the NACAC Championships, which were held in Orlando, Florida. The three runners were selected to the U.S. team based off being the top non-IAAF World Championship qualifiers from last month\'s USA Cross Country Championships.

Virginia Intermont College\'s Fernando Cabada led a contingent of high performing Cobras at East Tennessee State University\'s Niswonger Invitational this past weekend. Cabada came from behind to out kick a stellar field in the invitational 3,000-meters. His time of 8:08, a nation leading mark, bested runner-up teammate David Cheromei by three seconds. The duo combined to outdistance Liberty\'s Josh McDougal, who in cross-country had beaten both when taking the individual title at the Great American Nike Race of Champions. McDougal had only suffered one loss this entire year, that being at the NCAA Division I XC Championships.
