Team Virginia had quite the showing in day one of the 2018 National Championships. That included two national champions and five All-American finishes.

Norcom senior Romero Hines had a big weekend as he garnered three first place showings at the Gloucester Pre-Holiday Invite including a personal best leap of 45'2.50" in the triple jump and state leading performance of 35.79 in the 300 meter dash. Hines also had the best mark in the long jump at 21 feet even.

The Green Dragon Relays, rescheduled for Tuesday at the Arthur Ashe Center in Richmond featured several of the state's top athletes in the field events including new state leader and US #2 performer Stephanie Oleson of Henrico with her 11'6" clearance. Also competing in the meet were Highland Springs two field event stars in girls high jumper Sherhae Holloway and boys shot put thrower Sulaiman Fareed as both state leaders won their respective events without much competition.

The AAA indoor state champion in the 55 meter hurdles had one of the best meets out of any of the athletes at STC in winning both the 110 and 300 meter hurdles races in meet record times of 14.04 and 37.79 respectively, which are easily state best times in both events.
Highland Springs senior Rashaad Cannon and Deep Creek senior Ashley Gatling have been selected as MileStat.com Athletes of the Week ending in Saturday, April 14th. Both Cannon and Gatling were close national runners-up at Nike Indoor Nationals this past March and appear to be hungry this spring for their last opportunities for national championship glory as at the Taco Bell Classic, Cannon turned in his first 24 foot performance in the long jump with a US #6 mark of 24'0.50", while Gatling cleared 5'10" for the first time since her freshmen year to move her to a US #1 ranking in the high jump.

Mills Godwin senior Anne Marie Gordon likes drama apparently. Not only is she in theatre at school, but seems to like to wait till the final attempt when clearing personal best heights in the pole vault. At last March\'s National Scholastic Indoor Championships, Gordon cleared 11\'7.25\" on her third attempt at the height. On Saturday at the Keydet Invitational, Gordon cleared a best height of 11\'9\" in similar dramatic fashion on her final attempt at the height.
As one of the state's longest running high school indoor invitationals moved into another decade, two local female athletes really excelled at a familar venue for both of them in Orange County's Ashontae Jackson and Louisa County's Javanique Burruss with double wins in their specialty of events.
