CLEMSON, S.C. – Two podium finishes by
Elaine Derricott (Richmond, Va./Henrico) and one by
Aimee Veatch (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) highlighted day one of competition for the Radford women's track and field team at the Big South Indoor Championships on Saturday, hosted by Clemson University.
After day one of competition, the Radford women are in third place with 43 points.
Derricott placed first in four out of the five events to finish first in the pentathlon with 3,441 points. She is the first Highlander to win the event since it's inception in 2006. She also placed third in the long jump with a mark of 5.58m (18'3.75”).
Veatch topped the field in the weight throw competition by reaching an NCAA Provisional mark and a new indoor season-best distance of 19.89m (65'3. 25”). Her closet competition was almost four meters behind and three of her six throws reached a mark of 18.54m (60'10”) or more.
Elsewhere in the field events,
Lindsey Noe (Goldvein, Va./Liberty-Bealeton) placed eighth with a new indoor season-best score of 2,708 points and
Caronda Bond (Richmond, Va./Essex County College) finished 10th with 2,681 points in the pentathlon.
Nikki Roseberry (Dublin, Va./Pulaski) placed fourth in the high jump with a new season-best mark of 1.63m (5'4. 25”), while
Kaylor Vaughn (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) cleared 1.58m (5'2. 25) to finish in sixth place. Freshman
Jessica Barron (Prince George, Va./Prince George) registered a 12th place finish in the high jump with a mark of 1.48m (4'10. 25).
In the long jump,
Kayla Christian (New Kent County, Va./New Kent) jumped to an 18th place finish with a mark of 4.89m (16'00”).
Michelle Baird (Ottawa, Ontario/University of Charleston) registered a season-best throw of 13.31m (43'8”) in the weight throw.
Brittany Whittaker (Pilot, Va./Radford) qualified for the finals in the 800m with a time of 2:18.50, while
Maggie Wissler (Pittsburg, Pa./Brentwood) placed 13th with a time of 2:24.29.
Lori Crotts (New Castle, Va./Craig County) placed fourth in the 3,000m with a time of 10:13.68, while
Brittany Christian (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) crossed the finish line in ninth with a new indoor season-best time of 10:36.96.
Christian also recorded season-bests in the 60m and 200m with times of 8.08 and 26.65, respectively.
The distance medley quartet of
Tara Connor (Virginia Beach Va./Kellam) Whittaker,
Cori Tedesco (Chester, N.J./West Morris Central) and
Shanae Harris (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) placed sixth with a time of 12:40.89.
The Highlanders will be back on the track tomorrow for the final day of the Big South Indoor Championships starting at 1 p.m.
