CHARLESTON, S.C. –
Bryan Wallace (Millers Tavern, Va./Essex) and
Brett Olinger (Timberville, Va./Broadway) of the Radford men's track and field team each set new school records on the final day of competition as the Highlanders finished the 2010 Big South Championships with a third place overall finish at Bagwell/Settles Track and Field Complex.
The Highlanders finished with 100 points, 17.5 points out of second place.
As a team, Radford posted 28 personal-bests and six school records over the championship weekend.
Senior
Matt Dobson (Centreville, Va./Chantilly) was honored for his work in the classroom and in the field by being named to the Big South All-Academic team.
Olinger crossed the finish line in second place with a personal-best time of 52.844 and bested Wayne Gore's previous time of 53.52. Second place had to be decided by a photo finish and it showed that Olinger edged Liberty's Courtney Taylor at the finish by two one-thousandths of a second.
Wallace raced to a seventh place finish and a new school record in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.99. He beat his old time of 15.12, which he set in 2008 at the Radford Invitational.
Jordan Wynder (Yorktown, Va./Tabb), Olinger,
Olajuwon Jones (Indianapolis, In./Speedway) and
Kaise White (Houston, Texas/Freedom) topped the field in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:15.04. This is the third straight outdoor conference championship for the Radford 4x400m relay team.
The Highlanders held off a hard charging Liberty team to finish third in the 4x100m relay. Olinger started the race on the curve then handed it to
Austin Cuffee (Hampton, Va./Bethel) who raced down the back stretch and handed off to the 200m school record holder,
Raschad Kelso (Appomattox, Va./Appomattox), who then leaned into the curve and finally gave it to the anchor Jones, who then preceded to fly down the home-stretch and out lean Liberty's Jacey Bailey to finish with a time of 41.23.
Elsewhere on the track, Radford received 29 points from the 200m and 400m. Jones clocked in with a season-best time of 47.21, while White ran a personal-best time of 48.24 to finish third. Wynder closed out the scoring in the 400m with a personal-best time of 49.06 and a sixth place finish.
The 200m saw Radford place three in the top seven. Cuffee ran a time of 21.55 to place third, while Jones crossed the finish line in fifth with a time of 21.67 and Kelso pulled up lame 100m into the race but still finished in seventh place.
On the field, Dobson placed fourth in the discus with a toss of 46.95m (154'0”).
Justin Smith (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) reached a distance of 45.34m (148'9”) to finish sixth in the discus.
Antonio Milier (Richmond, Va./Manchester) jumped 14.02 m (46'0”) to capture seventh place in the triple jump.
The Highlanders will be back on the track May 14 at the Georgia Tech Invitational.
