RADFORD, Va. – The Radford men's and women's cross country teams are set to host the Big South Preview on Saturday, Sept. 25 at the Blacksburg Middle School course. The women's 5K will kick off the competition at 10:30 a.m., followed by the men's 8K at 11:30 a.m.
Eight league institutions will be participating in the race that will serve as a tune-up for the Big South Championships, which will be held on Oct. 30. Radford is hosting the event for the first time since 1998.
The 2010 season has seen six individual meet winners from Big South schools (Liberty – 3, VMI – 2, Winthrop 1).
As a team, the women's squad garnered a second-place performance at the VMI Cross Country Relays and a third-place finish at the James Madison Invitational. On the men's side, the Highlanders recorded third-place showings at VMI and James Madison.
Fresh off their first Big South Conference Runners of the Week distinctions (Sept. 15), freshmen
Brian Gorwitz and
Ashley Lounsbury lead the way for the Highlanders' distance programs. The freshmen duo are among 13 underclassmen on a combined team of 16 total runners.
Alongside Lounsbury, three other Highlander women,
Jessica Arneson,
Hannah Scheren, and
Maggie Wissler, finished in the top-15 at James Madison.
