MEN'S RESULTS
BLACKBURG, Va. – The Radford men's cross country team garnered a fifth-place showing at the 2010 Big South Cross Country Championships presented by UCS and Musco Lighting Saturday morning.
The team finish (153 points) was only 21 points behind Winthrop who grabbed fourth-place. Liberty, High Point and VMI garnered the top three showings. Defending national champion Sam Chelanga of Liberty took home the individual title.
In the preseason rankings, the Radford men were picked ninth and today the team garnered a fifth-place showing to become perhaps the biggest surprise team in the meet. It was the highest finish since 2007 for the men.
“I'm very happy for the men's team,” said head coach Sean Bossman. “At the beginning of the year, we were ranked ninth and I told them to be mad at that because that's not who we are. We showed that today and got fifth and was very close to fourth.”
The Highlanders were led by freshman Brian Gorwitz, who ran his second best time of the season (26:30.93), which was good for 23rd place out of 81 total participants.
Freshman Thomas Keefe shattered his personal best time by 53 seconds, running a 27:03.06 to finish second among the Highlanders and 30th overall.
Freshman Graham Schlickenmeyer and sophomore Sam Keltner had back-to-back finishes (37th and 38th), recording 27:20.38 and 27:22.39 times, respectively. Keltner was also honored with a place on the Big South All-Academic Team.
