Salute To Seniors: Ryan Hughes

Ryan's Athlete Profile

What was your most memorable race/competition?

My most memorable race was the Conference 14 XC championships this year. Although I raced hard and finished second, my team came into the race ranked last and ended up finishing third, qualifying us for regionals.

Where did you face your biggest competition? or What was your favorite meet and why?

My biggest competition in my opinion was the Loudoun County XC Championships. Loudoun County has so many great runners that are willing to compete. The best part is that because we live so close to one another we actually got to become great friends and train with each other. But of course every time we race we leave nothing behind us.

If you could, what would you do differently with your high school running career?

If I could do one thing differently with my high school career it would be eating healthier. While I eat my share of very healthy food, I eat my share of unhealthy as well.

Out of all of your high school accomplishments, which stands out the most?

Out of all my accomplishments my biggest is placing All-State in the 1600 my junior year. After a very disappointing State Cross Country race, and several Achilles problems, it was the exact confidence booster I needed going into my senior year.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

The most difficult obstacle I have to come is the recurring inflammation of my Achilles tendons. During track season after all the speed workouts, they always seem to flare up and I have to find a way to deal with them.

What was your most difficult workout?

My most difficult workout is actually one I did with Andrew Hunter of Loudoun Valley. We did a Critical Velocity paced workout, hill repeats, and striders all the weekend before the Millbrook Invite, which I ended up Pr'ing in!

What will you miss the most?

What I will miss most is not being able to run with my team or getting together to hangout. Although we are all in various grades, we have become really close.

How have your coaches influenced your performances and your life goals?

My coaches have always supported me in everything I do on and off the track!

What are your plans for college?

I will be running for the University of Pittsburgh next year! I plan to study Bioengineering and eventually continue to Graduate school for Cell-tissue Engineering. Hail to Pitt!

What is your advice for an incoming freshman running/competing in the same events as you did?

My advice to an incoming freshman is find a way to enjoy what you do. For me, I really enjoyed waking up early to get a distance run in before the day even started. So if freshman can find a way to have fun with training while staying on page, they can be really successful.

Shout Outs?

A shout-out to my parents, siblings and all my friends who have come to support me racing over the years!
