Moye sub 5 & sub 11 in the ASHE CENTER!!! One thing that Cosby senior Megan Moye cannot do is slow down. Moye forgot that you are not suppose to able to run fast on the Arthur Ashe Center's 145 meter no spikes allowed surface. At the 2012 Central Region Indoor Championships, she put together a nothing but record breaking distance triple which could stand the test of time and never be outdone at the Ashe Center. On Friday night, Moye anchored her 4x800 meter relay with a 2:19 split to a meet and facility record time of 9:38.04. On Saturday, the NC State recruit followed up that sizzling relay leg with a 33 laps of pacing done by someone appearing to possess super human abilities as an unbreakable machine. Moye broke the meet and facility record of 5:03.15 (Amanda Patterson of Midlothian, 2004) with the first sub 5 minute 1600 on the short track at the Ashe Center in 4:59.44. Not finished, Moye nearly lapped the entire field in the 3200 meter run which included two 11 minute flat caliber runners in Molly Breidenbaugh and Rachel Galton with the first sub 11 minute 3200 meter performance ever in the Ashe Center. Her time of 10:49.17 broke another meet and facility record previously held by former Midlo runner Amanda Patterson by 13 seconds. The Cosby girls were so dominated as a team that Moye could have skipped the meet if she wanted to and the Titans would have still won with their whopping team total of 110 points.   Taranisha Taylor (pictured above Ryan Kelly) was one of several individual athletes from the Eastern Region Championships to have an all-time great performance this weekend. Taylor's 7.94 clockings in both the 55 meter hurdles prelims and finals ranks her #6 all-time in Virginia high school history. Grassfield had a pair of athletes elevate themselves among the all-time greats as Kiara Howell had a monster throw of 48'4.75" in the shot put to tie former Cox High great Lindsay Neuberger as Virginia high school indoor state record holder, while Trey Holloway continues to move up the top 10 all-time list in the 55 meter hurdles including a VA #4 all-time 7.24 clocking in the prelims. Carolyn Brown of Phoebus broke the freshmen 55 meter dash state record with a 7.02 performance in the prelims.   Seven of the eight indoor regional championship meets will be held this week in Virginia with three slated for Wednesday (Northwest, Region I, Region II), two slated for Saturday only (Northern & Region III), and two slated over the course of two days on Friday and Saturday (Central & Eastern). The Region IV Championships were held this past Saturday at Virginia Tech. • Runner-up Moye leads VA girls under 5 at Millrose mile

Photo by Kyle Brazeil   The state of Virginia was well represented in Saturday night's high school girls mile race at the Millrose Games with three Virginians competing between Cosby's Megan Moye, Lake Braddock's Sophie Chase, and Ocean Lakes' Audrey Batzel. The returning Group AAA indoor and outdoor state champion Moye established herself near the front at the start of the race and maintained a top 3 position throughout the race. The furthest which Moye fell back was to fourth place at the quarter mile around 73 seconds, but moved herself up after a 2:27 half mile split. While Samantha Nadel of New York was able to run away with a 4:46 win, the NC State recruit Moye battled with Nadel's North Shore High School teammate Brianna Nerud for second place in the final 400 meters after running just under 3:40 at the three-quarters mark. Moye edged Nerud at the line for a final time of 4:49.95, which was just off her VA #2 indoor all-time mile performance of 4:49.36 from the New Balance Games. Sophie Chase and Audrey Batzel got stuck in the back half of the field early on, but Chase was able to move up throughout to finish fifth overall in a time of 4:54.14, while Batzel made for three sub 5 minute milers from Virginia in the same race with her 8th place effort of 4:57.56. A mile PR for Chase, which converts to only a tad slower than her 4:52.06 1600 meter PR. Batzel improved her season best time of 4:58.07 from her Hispanic Games race which qualified her for the Millrose Games. The West Potomac girls competed in the 4x800 meter relay at Millrose and their quartet ended up running a time of 9:26.58 for 8th place.   Millrose Games High School Results

  • VISAA State Indoor Championships Coverage

Girls Results Going into the final event of the meet, the Liberty Christian Academy girls held a narrow 2 point advantage over St. Catherine's in the team standings. After the 4x400 meter relay, there was no outright state team champion as St. Catherine's winning the event and LCA trailing in close behind in second place created the co-team champions between the two squads both tallying 143 points.   Boys Results The Fork Union boys looked like the FUMA boys of old dominance, which the program at one point in time had a streak of consecutive state track titles spanning over 3 decades. The 2012 state indoor title was never in question for Fork Union and they further distanced themselves down the stretch with a 1-2 finish in the 1000 from Michael Idziak (2:33) and Avery Martin (2:34), which the pair also opened and anchored for Fork Union's first place 4x400 meter relay (3:30.18). Both started their days as runners-up individually in the 1600 for Martin and Idziak in the 500.    Race Videos More to come from the VISAA State Championships including race videos and photo gallery from Brandon Miles.

  • Atlantic Coast Invitational Coverage

Photos by Ryan Kelly   MileStat.com will be on-site with photo coverage from Ryan Kelly. Live results throughout the meet. The hurdles finals on Friday saw historic performances from Grassfield senior Trey Holloway and Landstown junior Leah Lott. Holloway at the Atlantic Coast Invitational, blazed through the hurdles in the finals with a VA #5 all-time performance of 7.28, which currently ties him as the national leader. Meanwhile, Lott joined only 15 other past Virginia high school girls to dip under 8 seconds in the 55 meter hurdles with a VA #12 all-time clocking of 7.99. Current 55 dash state leaders Justin Burke of First Colonial and Taranisha Taylor of Western Branch both came away with victories on day one of the Atlantic Coast Invite, but neither were able to improve upon their season best with winning times of 6.48 and 7.06 respectively. In the field events, Kempsville senior Taylor Frenia was trying to match or better his VA #9 all-time mark of 61'3.25" from two weeks ago in the shot put, but had to settle with a 59'1" winning mark which still is top 20 all-time territory. Lakeland's Anaquan Peterson, a returning indoor All-American in the triple jump, was only a few inches off his season best mark last week at Virginia Tech (47'7") with a leap of 47'3".      Atlantic Coast Invitational Complete Results 113 National Elites Photo Gallery by Ryan Kelly - Day 1 photos posted.

  • Batzel (#7) & Johnson (#16) move up VA all-time 1000 list, Evans (#8) joins list

Three girls from Virginia competed last night in the New Balance Collegiate Invitational elite high school girls 1000 meter run. While competing unattached, Midlothian's Skylar Evans and Marie Johnston along with Audrey Batzel of Ocean Lakes, were pulled along in a loaded field to Virginia top 20 all-time performances. Batzel, competing again next weekend at the Armory in the Millrose Games mile, was the top finisher from Virginia with a VA #7 all-time performance of 2:53.05 for sixth place in the race. Batzel was closely followed in by Midlothian senior Skylar Evans in seventh place with a VA #8 all-time run of 2:53.38. Marie Johnston's old sister, Paige is #4 on the VA all-time list at 2:51.05, and she still has a year to close in on Paige's time after her VA #16 effort of 2:54.68 on Friday night. Midlothian coach Stan Morgan currently has coached four of the 16 fastest girls at 1000 meters in Virginia high school history with #4 Paige Johnston (2:51.08 - 2008), #8 Skylar Evans (2:53.38), #9 Kathleen Lautzenheiser (2:53.58), and #16 Marie Johnston (2:54.68).

  • Athlete Spotlight: Sean McGorty

Photo by Don Rich   Coming from two high school and collegiate track star parents in pole vaulting dad Kevin McGorty and distance running mom Vicki Verinder (now Vicki McGorty), Chantilly junior Sean McGorty has already made a name for himself with his own two feet. McGorty this past fall qualified for the Foot Locker Nationals (like his mother did at Langley in the early 1980s) in San Diego and had an impressive run at Balboa Park to finish 10th overall and beat his friendly regional rival at Annandale High School in Ahmed Bile as well in the race. While not pressured or pushed hard to run by his parents when entering high school, McGorty made a big jump in his sophomore year to earn All-State honors in both cross country, indoor, and outdoor track. Most impressive among his All-State accolades as a sophomore was the fact that he was able to successfully double in the distance races with top 8 finishes both indoor and outdoor in the 1600 and 3200 meter run.   McGorty is part of a growing list of national caliber and state champion distance runners being developed by Chantilly coach Matt Gilchrist in the past six years following the likes of Chris Foley, Lia Divalentin, and Brad Siragusa. The Chantilly team, led currently by McGorty, has been achieving some first-time feats and ending long droughts for the program including winning district titles last year in track and winning major invitationals in cross country as well as advancing for the state meet for the first time since 1992 this past fall.  At the first day of the Concorde District Championships last week, McGorty got the Chargers out to a grew start when he ran a state leading and personal best time of 4:15 for 1600 meters. MileStat.com interviewed the 2011 Foot Locker All-American in McGorty in between the six day break between day one (January 26th) and day two (February 2nd) of his district indoor championship meet at the Prince George County's Sports & Learning Complex.

Hoya Saxa!   February 1st was the first day for today's high school senior student-athletes to sign their National Letter of Intents with their future colleges and university. Several top athletes in Virginia had already made verbal commitments earlier this school year, while some waited till this week to make their decision and others are still taking their time and weighing their options. Let us know of any college commitments, which we currently do not have listed on our 2012 college signings list. We will also have frequent results updates throughout the meet (check the meet page throughout the two days for results by event). Three Virginia girls posted state leading performances on day one including two US #1 performances from Ocean Lakes senior Audrey Batzel in the 3200 meter run (10:39.96) and Louisa County junior Javanique Burrus in the long jump (20'1"). Batzel has put together a string of outstanding races over the last month including a 4:58 mile and 2:55 1000. Burrus had only been over 19 feet once, while being a consistent performer ov er 18 feet prior to her big mark at St. Chris. The third state leading performance came from Matoaca sophomore Briana Hayes, who bettered her VA #1 season best by clearing at US #7 height of 5'7" in the high jump. An outstanding boys' long jump competition with three over 23 feet led by winner Jamarian Bates of Matoaca at a US #7 leap of 23'8.75". St. Christopher's stellar indoor track facility for whatever reason has not produced the always fastest times in the 55 dash or hurdles, but Phoebus freshmen Carolyn Brown dispelled that assumption with a facility record breaking 7.04 clocking in the 55 meter dash.   Meet Page & Coverage  Complete Results Photo Gallery by Ryan Kelly - 6,331 photos total

  • Underwood to race Saturday night at the MSG

Photo by Andrew Kicinski   West Potomac senior Sarah Jane Underwood will be racing Saturday evening in the invitational high school mile race at the first ever USATF U.S. Open, which is a meet that has been created to replace the Millrose Games at the Madison Square Garden in New York City. The Millrose Games still exist (which 3 Virginian girls have qualified for the mile in), but have moved this year to the faster 200 meter banked track at the New York Armory on a later date. However, the USATF has stepped up to host a indoor track & field meet at the historic short banked track found within the Madison Square Garden and this new meet has many of the same events of the Millrose Games including an invitation-only high school mile race which Underwood has been selected for. The West Potomac senior has already ran a 5:09 full mile earlier this month at the Montgomery Invitational and last month ran a personal best time of 2:55.97 in the 1000 meter run. This will be Underwood's second consecutive weekend in New York City after she ran on West Potomac's 4x800 meter relay last weekend at the New Balance Games which clocked a state leading performance of 9:26.50. This event will be broadcasted on ESPN2 on January 29, 7:00-9:00 p.m.   Official USATF U.S. Open Meet Website MileSplit's Meet Page

  • Swift 1600s lead-off for Concorde District

Photos by Ed Lull   Swift 1600 meter races highlighted day one of the Concorde District Champions at the Prince George County's Sports & Learning Center. Foot Locker All-American Sean McGorty (4:15.29) of Chantilly battled down to the wire with Michael McNamee (4:15.78) of Oakton. McGorty won in the end, but both runners achieved personal bests under the old meet record of 4:16.75 (Phil Gaeta, Oakton, 2002) and the state's top two times this indoor season. The Oakton girls really dominated the 1600 meter run with only James Robinson's Macey Schweikert (3rd, 5:08.86) and Chantilly's Kendall Cowne (5th, 5:10.8) able to break up the Lady Cougars pack. Oakton had the top 2 finishers between freshmen Allie Klimkiewicz (1st, 5:06.70) and junior Briana Stewart (2nd, 5:07.42) while their other teammates Hailey Dougherty (4th, 5:09.61) and Kristi Carrigan (6th, 5:13.30) ran impressive times. If they decide to run a 4xmile relay at the indoor nationals, the Oakton girls could be very competitive in that event.   Herndon's Carina Peter leaped and sprinted out to a stellar first day of championship season with a US #12 personal best mark of 18'9.75" in the long jump, while running away with first in the 55 meter dash finals with an all-time best 7.14 clocking. Early season US 55 meter dash leader Ayo Raymond of James Robinson was able to cruise through his district meet in a finals time of 6.44 on Thursday. Raymond has been consistent with his times as the Robinson junior has clocked two 6.43's and two 6.44's this season. Another Robinson athlete Chioma Onyekwere is performing well at the right time of the season as last spring's third place finisher in the girls' shot put at the outdoor state championships threw just off 40 feet with a mark of 39'10.25".   After day one events, Oakton girls (75 pts) lead after 23 points from the 1600 meter run and another 20 points from Meghan Jean-Baptiste as a multi-event winner in the 55 meter hurdles (8.83) and high jump (5'0") as well as runner-up in the long jump. Meanwhile, defending boys' team champions Chantilly find themselves tied up with Oakton at 53 points even.     Concorde Championships Day 1 Results

  • 1/4 of the Millrose girls mile field from VA

Photos by Kyle Brazeil of MileSplit New York     Announced after the New Balance Games on Saturday, January 21st, three girls from Virginia earned their way into the Millrose Games high school mile field with either top two finishes at select Armory races this season or on time. This year's Millrose Games will be held Saturday, February 11th in a new location (previously at the Madison Square Garden) at the New York Armory. Earlier this season, Ocean Lakes senior Audrey Batzel earned her spot with a fourth place finish of 4:58.07 at the Hispanic Games on January 8th. Meanwhile, Foot Locker finalists Megan Moye of Cosby and Sophie Chase of Lake Braddock visited New York City last weekend for the final qualifier race for Millrose. Moye nearly was able to run away from the field for a the win before Laura Leff of West Genesse (NY) was able to catch her down the final stretch for a 4:48.96 win. Despite not getting the win, her second place effort was the second fastest indoor mile time ever by a Virginia high school prep behind only Sarah Bowman (4:46.79) of Fauquier. Her mile time of 4:49.36 from the New Balance Games converts to 4:47.68 for 1600 meters. Taking third in the race behind Moye was her rival Sophie Chase, who had beaten Moye in all four of their head-to-head races in cross country season. The Lake Braddock junior qualified by time for Millrose with her VA #12 all-time indoor performance of 4:55.79 last weekend at the Armory. One-fourth of the 12 runner high school girls' mile field for Millrose will be from the state of Virginia with Batzel, Chase, and Moye accepting their race invitations.

Ray was right off at the time with a 8 seconds flat clocking in the finals on Friday night, which moves her into the #1 ranking in the country. She was helped to the time by her rival Leah Lott of Landstown who was right on her heels with a US #2 clocking in 8.01 for an epic race for two non-seniors (Lott is a junior).   Taylor Frena of Kempsville launched a monster throw in the shot put to improve his personal best by four feet with a US #3 performance of 61'3.25". Frenia has improved nearly a full 10 feet in one year's time from last indoor season.   The Ocean Lakes girls 4x800 meter relay featuring sub 5 minute miler Audrey Batzel and state cross country runner-up Nikki Park went onto run the state's second fastest time in the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 9:36.99. The relay did not include Olivia Bethune (who has ran 3:00 in the 1000), so Ocean Lakes could be in the mix at the state meet which they had won the state indoor title a few years back.

  • Athlete Spotlight: Michael Cherry

Michael Cherry had been fortunate to be part of some great relays at Oscar Smith for his first two years of high school including an outdoor state champion 4x400 as a freshmen and nearly a second 4x400 state title last spring if not for a uniform violation disqualified his relay last spring. Cherry, who was the only freshmen 400 meter dash state qualifier in Group AAA two years ago, started to break through individually on the state level in making the finals of the 400 meter dash at the 2011 VHSL Group AAA State Outdoor Championships and over the summer dropped his 400 meter time down to 48.30 while competing for the Five Star Track Club. With Cherry as the lone returnee from Oscar Smith's 3:18 4x400 meter relay last year, the focus has shifted more to his individual events for his junior year. Over the winter break at the Boo Williams Sportsplex, he defeated one of the state's top returning quarter milers in Woodrow Wilson's Kenneth Williams with a US #9 clocking of 49.20. The Oscar Smith junior is becoming a serious contender and challenger for state titles in the 300 and 500 meter dash indoors as well as certainly will be in the mix for the 400 meter dash in the spring of 2012. Cherry ran a state leading and US #5 time of 34.76 last week at Boo Williams and will be looking to drop his 500 meter time this weekend at the Hampton Roads Elite High School Showcase. MileStat.com interviewed Cherry as he tunes up for his third 500 meter race ever on Saturday.

While both Foot Locker finalists Sophie Chase and Megan Moye will be heading up to the Armory in New York City this weekend to run the mile at the New Balance Games, Ocean Lakes senior Audrey Batzel was up there two weeks ago for the Hispanic Games and ran the state's leading time for 1600 meters with her converted time of 4:56.34. Batzel, who ran a 2:18 open 800 over the winter break at Boo Williams, will be shooting for a fast time in the 1000 meter run this weekend at the Hampton Roads Showcase.

  • Athlete Spotlight: Hannah Meador

A competitive gymnast as a youth spending over 30 hours per week training, Fluvanna County sophomore Hannah Meador decided to give up the sport in middle school. She suddenly had a lot of free time and energy on her hands and needed to fill it with something else, which she did with the pole vault. As a freshmen last year at Fluvanna County, Meador was a state runner-up indoors and then won her first state title at the Group AA State Outdoor Championships. Her 11'9" clearance at the Jefferson District Meet was a Virginia high school freshmen record and put her only 3 inches away from joining a short list of vaulters in state history to have cleared 12 feet with three years left to go in high school.   After an incredibly successful first year of pole vault, Meador is back at in her sophomore year as she is the current state leader with two back-to-back 11'6" clearances at Fork Union over the past two weekends. The small town of Palmyra, Virginia which Fluvanna County High School is located within is becoming a launching pad for the pole vault in Virginia as Meador and teammate Chance Parmly (15'0" state best clearance at Fork Union) under the guidance of their coach Tom Casto are the top ranked vaulters for both boys and girls in the state. MileStat.com interviewed the promising young vault star Meador after her recent 11'6" season best clearance at Fork Union.

Despite being a state qualifier in the 400 meter dash last spring, Westfield junior Nathan Kiley caught many off guard including defending private school state 500 champion William Miller of Liberty Christian when he came from behind to win over Miller in the 500 meter dash at the Flames Invitational with a state best time of 1:05.97. Kiley had a 500 best last year of 1:11 and last month took first at the =PR= Holiday Invite in 1:07.15 before his breakthrough race at Liberty University.

  • Fred Hardy Invitational Highlights

The 1000 meter run and pole vault had the best performances for both genders at the 2012 Fred Hardy Invitational at Fork Union's Estes Athletic Center. While their times might be the best times in Virginia this indoor season, their performances given on a 160 meter short track might be the best this season in the state with Hidden Valley's Carolyn Bethel at 2:56.45 in the girls' race and Fork Union's Michael Idziak at 2:34.48 in the boys' race. Personal runs for both and re-affirms that runners can roll out fast times at the Estes Center. Fluvanna County shined in the pole vault as they have done all winter between their two state leading vaulters in sophomore Hannah Meador (11'6") and Chance Parmly (15'0"). For Parmly, it was his first time over 15 feet. Read more...   Fred Hardy Invitational Complete Results

  • Flames Invitational Day 1 Coverage

Photos by Andrew Kicinski   Top performance from the first of two long days of high school track & field action at the Liberty Flames High School Invitational belonged to Rashaan Jones of South Lakes clearing a US #1 height of 7 feet in the high jump. Jones, only a junior, has developed greatly from his sophomore year which he finished with a 6'6" clearance at the VHSL Group AAA State Outdoor Championships. Jones joins only seven others in Virginia high school indoor track history to have ever successfully cleared 7 feet.   Both seeded sections of the 1600 meter run produced swift times as Cave Spring sophomore Katie Fortner broke 5 minutes virtually leading wire to wire in a US #11 4:58.79 performance, while the Foot Locker All-American in Sean McGorty of Chantilly took charge similarly en route to his VA #2 victory at 4:19.31 in the boys' race. A deep race for both with 9 boys running 4:26 or faster and 11 girls breaking 5:20.     Not many athletes in Virginia's history have been as great as Felecia Majors is in the pole vault and excelled so well in other disciplines of track & field. The South County senior Majors cleared 11 feet to win the pole vault easily, but even more impressively won the 300 meter dash against previous state leader and regional rival Genamarie McCant with a state leading and US #9 clocking of 40.24. The title of Miss Versatility in Virginia might not necessarily go to Shakeela Saunders in her back to Virginia with the continued improvements made by Majors, who also will qualified for the finals of the 55 meter dash to be held on Saturday and finished second in the long jump on Friday with a mark of 17'3.25".   Liberty Flames HS Invite Day 1 Results Photo Gallery & Race Videos to come later this weekend. • Athlete Spotlight: Kaila Blackburn

It seems like half her time has been spent cross training and the other half her time has spent running when summing up Monacan senior Kaila Blackburn's high school running career. She has had to deal with two stress fractures in the past which caused her to miss most of her sophomore outdoor season and another one to miss her entire junior indoor season. After spending some time resting and cross training following the end of a cross country which iron deficiency slowed her down in the final two races at Foot Locker South, she has returned back to running faster than ever. Blackburn has destroyed her previous personal bests at 3200 (10:56.74), 1600 (4:58.56), and 1000 (2:58.00) meters in only two indoor meets (both at Liberty University's Tolsma Track Center) in the past four weeks.

  • Athlete Spotlight: Maya Moore

Bethel senior Maya Moore is continuing a long line of great sprinters produced by Coach Eddie Williams and the Bethel program. More of a long sprints and middle-distance specialist, the 500 meter dash has become the perfect event for the tall and long striding Moore as she currently ranks #4 in the country from her 1:16.51 performance at the Southeastern Invitational.

  • Re-alignment talks again from VHSL

It seems that talks and proposals of re-alignments and creating more classifications for schools competing in the Virginia High School League has been on the table for years, but no changes have been made to date. The latest plan is to go from the current three classifications which has existed since 1970 and double to a new six class system starting in the 2013-2014 school year. The VHSL's executive committee will vote on the proposal on February 22nd with the final approval vote coming in April. In this new proposal, districts could include schools from different classifications (but no gap more than 3 classifications apart). Essentially, a 6A school could be in the same district as 3A schools but no 2A schools. Regional playoffs or qualifiers would be eliminated for a new qualification system to the state championships. It is not certain what the new qualification system would mean for cross country and track & field in a new 6 class system. Another previous proposal had mentioned sectional qualifiers instead of regional qualifier meets, which would not necessarily include schools who geographically match and more spread out based on enrollment and classification.    Articles on VHSL Re-Alignment: Virginia High School League moves toward six classifications (The Washington Post) VHSL poised for major realignment with 6 divisions (Roanoke Times)

  • Southeastern Invite Day 1: Justin Burke US #1 6.38 55!

In a loaded finals field of the 55 meter dash at the Southeastern Invitational featuring current US leader Ayo Raymond of James Robinson and another rising star within his district in Damian Smith of Green Run, First Colonial senior Justin Burke made a defiant statement that he is still considered as arguably Virginia's high school best sprinter with a US #1 clocking of 6.38. Burke is within reach of the Virginia high school all-time top 25 list in the 55 meter dash, which has a current cut-off at 6.33. It was a smoking finals with four athletes under 6.50 in Burke (6.38), Raymond (6.44), Smith (6.45), and Western Branch's Mondryl Glover (6.49).     Next best performance of the evening belonged to Grassfield senior Trey Holloway who continues to distance himself from the next best hurdlers in Virginia after taking his previous state leading season best time of 7.48 down to a US #2 performance of 7.39 in the finals on Friday night at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton. Holloway is also sniffing at joining the Virginia high school all-time top 25 club with Burke as the current cut-off time for joining the historic list of Virginia's greatest in the 55 meter hurdles is 7.36 currently.   MileStat.com is on-site for both days of coverage with video and photo coverage. • Liberty Elite Invite Highlights

Photo by Andrew Kicinski   A great competition in the jumps at the Liberty Elite Invitational on Saturday between David Prince of Patrick Henry (Roanoke) and David Johnson of Charlottesville. Prince recorded a huge personal best by 13 inches in the long jump with a VA #2 mark of 23'2", while Johnson was a foot behind in second place at 22'2". A big improvement for Prince, who failed to qualify for the Group AAA state outdoor championships. Johnson's specialty is the triple jump as a returning Group AA state champion, which he shined in again at Liberty University to improve his state leading mark in the event with a US #3 leap of 46'8".  Monacan senior Kaila Blackburn broke 11 minutes for the first time for 3200 meters in a duel with Watauga's (NC) Darby Middlebrook (2nd, 10:59) with a US #2 indoors performance of 10:56.74. Region IV outdoor 1600 meter champion Joel Johnston took first in the 1600 at the Liberty Elite meet with a time of 4:28, while Blacksburg junior Nick Link was able pull away from Staunton River's Stuart Robertson (9:40) for the win in the 3200 with a 9:36 clocking. Blacksburg sophomore Kendell Wiles dipped just under 1:20 in the 500 meter dash, while teammate Hannah Brown won the 1000 in 3:06 after getting a workout in by also competing in the 500 before and 300 after the 1000.   Liberty Elite Invitational Complete Results

  • All American Track Classic Coverage

Photo by Ryan Kelly   Western Branch girls showed themselves to still be another gear shift ahead of the rest of the state in 4x200 meter relay after a US #2 clocking of 1:42.91 at the All American Track Classic on Thursday at the Boo Williams Sportsplex.  Last year's relay for the Lady Bruins set the Virginia high school state record in the event with their 1:38.74 performance at the New Balance Indoor Nationals. This year's quartet appears to be capable of running under 1:40 again on a banked track later this season. Other top performances include Lafayette's Heidi Peterson running a solo 3:05 in the 1000 and 1-2 finish in the hurdles for Western Branch's Taranisha Taylor (8.28) and Shamia Lassiter (8.36). Defending Group AA 55 meter dash state champion Coby Branch of Nottoway opened with a 6.62 clocking and win at Boo Williams. Lafayette sophomore Derek Holdsworth now has the top performance in Group AA at 500 meters with his 1:08.96 performance. Carolyn Brown of Phoebus is one of the state's top freshmen talents so far this season as she followed up running a 40.88 in the 300 this season last weekend with a 7.21 clocking in the 55 meter dash.    All American Track Classic Complete Results All American Track Classic Photo Gallery by Ryan Kelly
