Athlete Feature: 5x State Champion & US #10 Maya Hanks

Your current state leader and US #10 in the triple jump is often overshadowed but not anymore. Despite winning five state titles over the past couple years, Tabb senior Maya Hanks has fallen under the radar at times due to other big names in the sport. That lack of coverage or starlight did not scare her away or disenfranchise her, it emboldened her to run faster, train harder, and certainly jump further.

Maya's speciality is the triple jump, there is no debating that. It was way back in 2015 actually when she took home her first state title in any event and it was in the triple jump. That indoor season marked the first of three indoor seasons in a row of eclipsing that 40' barrier.

Despite having broken 40' five times indoors, this season's opener was only the first time she has done it outdoors. Her current state leading mark of 40-9.5 ranks her 12th all-time in the state. It is also three feet further than any other outdoor season opener for her. This means it could be a huge season for her in the triple.

Though it is easy to see how she is improving both in the long and triple jumps, the most telling place for her improvements is in her sprint times. She is on route to pr in every sprint event 55-400 this season and is clearly running a lot more than jumping. This seems to be a huge help for her.

Moving forward she will have her hands full at 3A States with Amira Aduma and others but one thing is for sure, she is on the rise and ready for any competition that comes her way. Expect big things from Maya and with such a small workload this season thus far it looks like everyone in the nation should take notice come New Balance Outdoor Nationals.
