The private school runners on Friday at Woodberry Forest gave a sneak peak of what might be in store for the public school runners on Saturday at Great Meadow. The Division I boys got to break in the course with their spikes as the first race of the day, while the Division II girls had to navigate around the slop and mud in the last race of the day. The champions in the field though were not affected by the conditions as many of last year's winners once again claimed VISAA state cross country titles.

Fork Union's Josh Morris motored his way through an even more difficult Woodberry Forest course with a 16:19 win in the Division I boys race, while Dalton Kuhar of Fuqua school repeated as Division II girls champion to close the meet after race leader Covenant freshmen Alicia Fox fell not once but twice in the final 400 meters to slip to third pace. Morris looked very strong taking the lead from the start to break away from the field including several quality individuals and should be ready to represent the state well in post-season competition later this month. The freshmen Fox ran a gutsy race to separate herself from the defending race champion Kuhar and the rest of the Division II girls, but just fell short in the end and will certainly be contending for state titles in years to come.

It was a great meet for the defending meet champions as the Bishop O'Connell girls dominated once again with five runners in the top 15 and seven runenrs among the top 21 in the Division 1 girls, while the Woodberry Forest boys (61 pts) won a second straight Division I title against a surprising challenger in Episcopal (64 pts) by 3 points, who were bolsted by the return of Reid Nickle (5th place). Anneka Wilson of The Potomac School had company from three challengers through 2 miles before opening up in the final mile for a 7 second win over LIS champion Julia Sroba of Collegiate (19:56) with a time of 19:49.

Michael Bailey of Greenbrier Christian had no competition to push him in Division II as the #2 ranked runner in private school finished 1 minute and 17 seconds ahead of the second place finisher with his 16:53 performance. The catholic schools were the best in the smaller school division with Peninsula Catholic tallying 56 points for first and ahead of last year's Division II champions Roanoke Catholic with 75 points.
