Photos taken by John Herzog of the 400 meter dash from the 2006 VHSL Group AAA State Meet held at Todd Stadium in Newport News, Virginia on Friday and Saturday, June 2nd and 3rd. No need to fear about the lack of photos from the boys 400 when there was a torrential downpour of rain. Mr. Herzog may have had to put his expensive camera equipment away but this idiot named Brandon Miles was out on the track getting soaked without an umbrella and only had a trashbag covering his $3,000 camera filming the races. Those pictures will be coming soon.

AAA State Meet Day 2 Highlights MileSplit Staff Jun 3, 2006

At least the 2006 AAA State Meet did not encounter its usual 100 degree humid summer days in year\'s past as on and off rainfall and an overcast helped cool things off, but only heated up the competition and times. The Landstown track team won its second consecutive title, but it was the girls instead of the boys that won this year as they also tied like the boys with the Deep Creek girls, who also emerged out of the shadows of their boys\' program with a state championship title. The Landstown girls won the final event of the day in the 4x400 meter relay to tie Deep Creek, who had a 1-2 finish in the high jump from Ashley Gatling and Jonee Artis to jump start them. Meanwhile, Charles Clark and company put on a show on Saturday as Bayside won the boys\' team title. Clark won the 100, 200, and 400 meter dashes, while teammate Oliver Alexander finished state runner-up to Clark in both. Great Bridge boys fell short of a second state title as Mike Morrison won two events in the pole vault and 300 meter hurdles (after a disqualification by original winner Corey Vinston of Phoebus). AAA State Meet Day 1 Highlights MileSplit Staff Jun 3, 2006

Rain, wind, injuries, and scratches affected the first day of the AAA State Meet. Queen Harrison was an expected scratch from the meet after her injury suffered at Central Region Meet. Francena McCorory joined her on ending her high school career early as her hamstring injury will be forcing her to shut down racing for the entire summer. An unexpected scratch and injury was learned by the athlete that looked to be the next in line to take over McCorory\'s role in the Peninsula District, Eastern Region, and AAA State Meet as the most dominating sprinter in Woodside sophomore Dominique Jordan, who injured herself in a dance performance on Thursday. The meet also had to lag through a weather delay of 50 minutes, which forced the 400 meter qualifying heats to be cut out of Friday\'s portion of the meet to be moved to Saturday as finals only sections. Despite the injuries and weather, many things did go right on Friday. The two lone running event finals on Friday saw some outstanding races with the Lake Braddock girls getting that elusive 4x800 meter relay state title with a close 9:15 victory over Westfield at 9:17. The Colonial Forge boys solid depth on all four legs allowed them to run away with a winning time of 7:46 from the rest of the 4x800 meter relay field that featured teams with one or two studs such as Hermitage and Herndon having two 1:51 legs from Alex Bowman and Abe Daganchew. Future Norfolk State University teammates Marlon Woods of Booker T. Washington and Corey Vinston traded wins in the jumps on Friday with Woods winning his second high jump state title at a personal best height of 6\'10\", while Vinston was not far off his best in the long jump with a 24\'9\" mark.Only five inches separated the top five finishers in the long jump as Woodbridge\'s Brittni Dixon was a surprise winner in the event with a mark of 18\'9\". Kathy Howard of Lee-Davis successfully defending her shot put state title with a mark of 41\'6\". Massaponax\'s Dominique Smith made the discus competiton closer than expected with a best throw of 17\'1\" as top seed and state leader Mike Zajac hit 175\'4\" in the event. Chantilly senior Nicole Kazuba earned a second state title in the pole vault with 11\'6 clearance. Fastest times in the prelims included Cierra McGee in the girls 200 meter dash (24.65), Tierra Brown in the girls 110 meter hurdles (14.15), Nicole Saunders in the girls 300 meter hurdles (41.94), Courtland Marriner in the 200 meter dash (21.68),Chris Bell in the boys 100 meter hurdles (14.08), Oliver Alexander in the boys 100 meter dash (10.76), and Corey Vinston in the 300 meter hurdles (38.26). MileStat.com was on-site with John Herzog and Brandon Miles. Expect plenty of photo and video coverage from the meet for day 1 and day 2 coming up as well.

Athlete Spotlight: Charles Clark MileSplit Staff Jun 1, 2006

Bayside senior Charles Clark is rolling on all cylinders as his Bayside crew in preparation for this weekend\'s Group AAA State Meet in Newport News. Clark is carrying the momentum from his outstanding Eastern Region Meet where he posted two swift wind-aided times of 10.53 in the 100 meter dash and 20.91 in the 200 meter dash against the majority of his toughest competition in the state. An All-American as a junior last spring, Clark has stepped up his game to another level this year with an incredible indoor campaign that included a state championship in the 55 meter dash, national runner-up in the 60 meter dash and national title in the 200 meter dash at Nike Indoor Nationals. After looking to be in top form at his regional meet, Clark looks to turn the dial up one more notch at Todd Stadium on Friday and Saturday as he will be pressing on to Nike Outdoors, USATF Junior Nationals, and hopefully Worlds this summer. Clark will be going for a state title trifecta this Saturday as he is the top seed in both the 100 and 200 meter dash, while sits right off the number one spot in second in the 400 meter dash at 47.98.

If a state meet was scored by paper... MileSplit Staff Jun 1, 2006

Scoring of all three VHSL State Outdoor Track and Field Championships this upcoming weekend based off the performance lists. Scoring is eight places deep. There were a few mistakes in the performance lists that affect the list to some degree. Injuries and fatique will also play a role during the actual meet versus how the meet looks on paper going. Tiebreaker points were created for relays and individuals that shared the same time or mark (For example, two top seeds who have both cleared 6-8 in the high jump, each get 9.5 points versus 10 to first and 8 to second place in the regular meet setting).
