If you think that the Chapel Hill boys from North Carolina would fall off the radar after losing their top three runners from last year's Nike Team Nationals squad you better guess again. Chapel Hill opened their season at the WNC Carnival in Hendersonville, North Carolina on August 26th with a dominating 90 point margin of victory over second place Myers Park of North Carolina. On the Jackson Park 3.07 mile course, Chapel Hill put six runners in the top 20 as they were led by sophomore transfer Taylor Gilland, who finished second in the race behind Hickory (NC) junior Ryan Hill (15:52.47) in a time of 16:07.94. "Taylor did about what I thought, race-wise. He ran a smart race and knew how I wanted him to go through," said Chapel Hill coach Ron Olsen. Senior Miles Rampel (8th, 16:23.06), junior Peter Anderson (13th, 16:47.68), and junior Jack Marshall (15th, 16:59.45) dipped under 17 minutes on the course to finish in the top 15. Marshall ran a gutsy race after he lost his shoe in the first 200 meters of the race. As a result, Marshall has a sore and bruised heel, but Coach Olsen feels he will be ready to go again in a week.
