Robinson boys and girls take home both trophies

FAIRFAX, VA -- The 2001 Legard Relays was the opening meet for mainly all of the top teams in Northern Virginia. With the meet came some exciting relay races and individual performances with those team oriented events.

It was a good day to be a Robinson Ram. The boys and girls team titles were both won by Robinson with the girls winning over Jefferson with 59.5 points and the boys winning with 70 points over Centreville.

The only indivdiual events held were the freshmen/sophomore 1600m races. In the girls race, Dacia Barr of Centreville, one of the top underclassmen female distance runners in the state won the race convincingly with a time of 5:12.64. Barr also went onto to anchor her sprint medley relay to a meet record tying time of 4:14.64 with a 2:22 800 leg.

In the boys 1600m race, West Springfield sophomore John Cook won with the same dominance with his winning time of 4:35.64. Cook was also a member of the 4x800 winning West Springfield team with a time of 8:09.24.

The Robinson 4x1600 boys squad ran an impressive winning time of 18:23.14 which is about 4:35 average per leg. Their time is currently one of the fastest in nation this year.

Another impressive relay from a Northern Region boys squad was Oakton's sprint medley relay. They got out good with a 49 second 400 opening leg from junior Phil Gaeta, then closed strong with a 1:55 800 anchor leg from senior Matt Maline who is fresh off of his World XC race in Europe last weekend. Oakton finished with an overall time of 3:32.84 which set a new meet record.

Robinson's big boys can fly. The Robinson throwers won the 4x100m Clydesdale Relay in a meet record time of 48.84.

Jefferson's Krystal Moss helped her team make a run at the Robinson girls with her performances in the long jump and triple jump. Moss and Molly Mahar combined together to get a mark of 30 feet 11 inches in the long jump and in the triple jump Moss teamed with teammate Aparna Hirve for a mark of 64 feet 11 3/4 inches. Moss individually had a long jump of 15'10.75" and triple jump of 34'4".

Moss' teammate, Kelley Otstott also contributed greatly to her squad. With Otstott's 4:58 1600 anchor leg in the DMR, her squad was able to win with a time of 12:33.64.

The star everyone had hoped to be there running, South Lakes' Alan Webb, didn't run. However, he was present at the meet cheering on other runners and signing autographs as he was more than warmly received by his many fans and admiring competitiors.
