Region B Meet
Wednesday, November 1st
Panorama Farms - 5K
Charlottesville, VA
Meet summary:
If you thought the Clarke County boys were done then guess again. After a season of pre-season NTN hopes and at least being competitive with the top AAA and AA teams in the state was marred by injuries to two of their key runners in Ben Veilleux and Daniel Callan, the two-time defending Group A state champion Clarke County boys are not only looking ready to make a three-peat, but also possibly take down some top ranked teams in the combined state meet scoring next week.
At the Region B Meet at Panorama Farms, Clarke County averaged 16:48 as team with little competition to pust them as nearly put up a perfect 15 score in having five of the top six finishers with two-time defending Group A state champion Simon Biddle-Snead pacing his teammates in first at 16:411 with only 16 seconds separating the remaining top five runners with Chris York (2nd, 16:42), Ben Veilleux (3rd, 16:50), Bryan Broy (4th, 16:52), and Daniel Callan (6th, 16:57). Only Page County senior Ethan Price (5th, 16:54) was able to break up Coach Dustin Sweeney\'s top five.
It was not like the meet did not have some of the Group A\'s top individuals in the race as Region B has traditionally been the largest producer of All-State individuals within the classification as the race featured several Group A ranked individuals including Price, Josh Morris of Nelson County (7th, 17:02), and Andrew Rigler (8th, 17:06).
Price and Morris were able to lead both of their teams onto the state meet with Page County finishing a distance second to Clarke County with 92 points and Nelson County in third with 138 points. Buffalo Gap seized the final state meet spot with 143 points for fourth as Rappahannock County was 11 points shy of them in fifth.
The highly anticipated clash between nearly all of the Group A\'s top girls with the exception of Brittany Killough at J.J. Kelly and Megan Marsico at Glenvar gave a great preview for next weekend\'s state race. Clarke County sophomore Sophia Holmes certainly has the momentum going in now to win the state title as she picked up a decisive 15 second victory of Buffalo Gap senior Mariah Hagadone (2nd, 19:29) with a final time of 19:14 to win the Region B title. Quite an impressive group of individuals up front for a Group A region as George Mason junior Susanna Sullivan ran close to a sub 11 minute 3200 last spring and finished third in the regional race at 19:37.
Altavisa girls were closer than expected to defending Group A state champions and heavy favorites to win it again in the Clarke County girls at the Region B Meet. Altavista with 65 points, was only 16 points behind Clarke County with 49 points. Behind race champion Holmes, Clarke County had two more All-Region performers in Erin Broy (4th, 20:14) and 2004 state champion Danielle Moyer (10th, 21:11).
The Altavista girls were led by the top finishing freshmen in the region in Sarah Murphy as her time of 20:33 earned a sixth place finish.
Sullivan\'s third place finish helped George Mason to take third as well as team with 94 points.
With a top ten run of 21:06 for ninth place, Cerriance Leatherland was fourth place finishing Page County\'s leader to the state meet to join the boys as a team.
Region C Meet
Wednesday, November 1st
GIles HS - 3mi
Pearisburg, VA
Meet Summary:
Nathan Brame and both Radford teams look ready for strong state meet performances as top ranked Brame won by 35 seconds on a challenging three mile course at Giles High School in 15:38, while the Radford boys and girls each walked away with championship hardware from the Region C Meet.
Brame helped lead Radford (35 pts) to a 24 point team victory over Grayson County (59 pts) as his team had three of the top five finishers with himself, Charles Mogen (3rd, 16:35) and Daniel Harrell (5th, 16:54). Two solid individuals, who are expected to have high finishers in the Group A race next weekend at Great Meadows broke up a top three sweep for Radford with Lebanon\'s Jakob Maidens (2nd, 16:13) and Galax\'s Manuel Echeagaray (4th, 16:44).
The Radford girls with 41 points had a closer challenge from Patrick Henry with 50 points as the Region C champions put five runners in the top 15 and were led by Nikki Greco\'s fifth place effort of 20:30.
Glenvar freshmen Megan Marsico clocked a swift time of 18:57 to win her first regional championships as she heads into next Saturday\'s state race as a potential top five finisher.
Region D Meet
Wednesday, November 1st
Oxbow Lake - 5K
St. Paul, VA
RESULTS: Top 15 Results w/ Team Scores
Meet Summary:
With a newly designed 5K course at Oxbow Lake, the winners were bound to become the new course record holders. However, both Brittany Killough of J.J. Kelly and Zac Evans of Clintwood wanted to make statements to rest of the Group A runners that they are not regional champions by default and look to make some noise next weekend at Great Meadows.
Killough especially has an excellent chance at winning the state championship as she blazed through the Oxbow Lake course in a final time of 18:22 to finish well over a minute ahead of teammate Lauren Bonney in second at 19:35 as J.J. Kelly took the two individual spots.
However, J.J. Kelly had stick with runner-up honors in the team standings for the second week in a row to Gate City as they were well packed with five runners in the top 12. Gate City had a string of runners finish in places five through eight in Stephanie Howington (5th, 21:21), Tia Vermillion (6th, 21:46), Morgan Taylor (7th, 21:48), and Ashton Bishop (8th, 21:53).
Evans was followed to the line by a teammate also. Actually two to be exact with Clintwood sweeping the top three individual places in Evans, Evan Vanover (2nd, 16:51), and David Mullins (3rd, 16:53) as Clintwood won with 36 points. Castlewood was a distant runner-up with 76 points as they had two top five finishers in Josh Sproles (4th, 17:04) and Ethan Collins (5th, 17:16)
