Athlete Spotlight: Kali Watkins

NEWPORT NEWS, VA -- Athlete spotlight interview with Menchville senior Kali Watkins. The Notre Dame recruit clocked a personal best time of 7.95 to win the 55 meter hurdles at the Eastern Region Meet to defeat rival Tierra Brown of Hampton as well as dip under eight seconds for the first time. Watkins in the defending VHSL AAA state champion is the 55 meter hurdles and earned All-American honors in the 60 meter hurdles at the 2006 Nike Indoor Nationals.

MileStat.com: How does it feel to break eight seconds in the 55 meter hurdles? Obviously it was a goal you probably had in mind. Did you expect it to happen today, sooner, or later?

Kali Watkins: I'm really happy that I broke eight seconds. Yes, it was the goal that I had set for myself. My coach said that it would happen today, after what I ran at districts and how I was improving as time went by, but for me i think i was expecting it sooner. Thats what was so frustrating for me everytime I came to the line and fell short.
