Girls 55

Based off her 7.16 clocking at the Region I Meet, Garrick should roll to a victory here with Region II's best in James and Jenkins rounding out the top three after racing spikeless for their district and regional meets, but posting solid times nonetheless.

1. Kisha Garrick (Caroline) 7.14
2. Rashawnda James (Charlottesville) 7.35
3. Tanisha Jenkins (Louisa County) 7.40

Girls 300

Garrick gets the edge here in what should be a close battle on the basis that the 500 meter dash earlier should take more out of Cabbler than the 55 trials and finals will for Garrick. After running a 43.03 at the Estes Center for the Region II title, James slips in for her third top three finish on the track.

1. Kisha Garrick (Caroline) 40.95
2. Brittany Cabbler (William Fleming) 40.99
3. Rashawnda James (Charlottesville) 41.80

Girls 500

With the 300 meter battle looming in her mind against Garrick, Cabbler is going to try and conserve as much as possible in this race, but she cannot sleep on the field with four athletes behind her at 1:20.

1. Brittany Cabbler (Willliam Fleming) 1:19.3
2. Melone Wright (Riverbend) 1:20.0
3. Avery Mattingly (Blacksburg) 1:20.2

Girls 1000

Top seeds Berenato and Rapp will both be doubling back from hard 1600 meter races, while Region II champion Karla Slater will be racing fresh. If she can stay in contact, she could upset, but Berenato is a tough racer, so look for her to hold on for the win racing for the team on Saturdayand her first state title as a senior.

1. Cate Berenato (Blacksburg) 3:01
2. Laura Rapp (Heritage) 3:02
3. Karla Slater (Spotswood) 3:03

Girls 1600

White seems to be sharper this year with her leg speed based off her 2:52 1000 earlier in the month. She will using the state meet as a gauge of her fitness from last year in going after her own two state meet records. Her 4:55 last weekend at Heritage High School for a Region II win should be equivalent to a 4:50-4:53 range at Liberty. Berenato and Rapp will battle for second in what could be a Region III sweep of the top five places. Region II does not appear as dominant as it has in past years in the distance events with Region III much improved.

1. Catherine White (Northside) 4:52
2. Cate Berenato (Blacksburg) 5:06
3. Laura Rapp (Heritage) 5:08

Girls 3200

White will double back in the 3200 meter run, which will be interesting to see what kind of effort and time she runs because it almost seems as though she is shifting her focus from last year in the 3200 and two mile to the 1600 and mile this year as a senior. However, if White breaks her 10:40 state meet record this weekend, such an assumption would appear to be false as White was the national runner-up at Nike Indoor Nationals last March. MacMillan ran a sensational race to break 11:10 earlier in the month and looks to be the best bet for second. The question is will there be anyone else joining White and MacMillan under 11:20 with a group of runners seeming prime to dip under the time. Region II 1600 meter champion Catherine McGowan will go fresh into this event and has ran well this season.

1. Catherine White (Northside) 10:38
2. Laurel MacMillan (Blacksburg) 11:12
3. Catherine McGowan (Harrisonburg) 11:15

Girls 55 Hurdles

Sticking to the seed order for the top three as Region II champion looked great without spikes in a 8.59 clocking in her regional win over third seed Danyelle Kent-Robinson of Brentsville. Blacksburg's Annie Grant will put up a fight and will not give up her state title easily though.

1. Tanisha Jenkins (Louisa County) 8.53
2. Annie Grant (Blacksburg) 8.56
3. Danyelle Kent-Robinson (Brentsville) 8.60

Girls 4x200

Look to William Fleming and Louisa County to break up a complete dominantion of the Region teams in this event as they currently have four of the top six seeds. Louisa County especially is much better than their seed time as they have been running on slower tracks and in particular, the 160 meter track found at the Estes Center without spikes.

1. Riverbend 1:47.3
2. Louisa County 1:47.6
3. William Fleming 1:48.0

Girls 4x400

Blacksburg will close out with a win to put the icing on the cake for their state team championship while others behind them try to get last second points to vie for final team positions. The relay specialist squad from Charlottesville pulls out second to move them into a state runner-up team finish.

1. Blacksburg 4:09
2. Charlottesville 4:11
3. Courtland 4:12

Girls 4x800

With cross country always in the back of their minds, Brentsville will look to get a morale victory over Blacksburg after losing their state title in cross country to them and take advantage of the Blacksburg not running their "A" team. Charlottesville does it again in the relays and takes a top three finish.

1. Brentsville 9:42
2. Blacksburg 9:50
3. Charlottesville 10:00

Girls High Jump

Region I champion Waller comes through with a personal best day, but earlier misses give Kent-Robinson the win with both clearing 5'6".

1. Danyelle Kent-Robinson (Brentsville) 5'6"
2. Monae Waller (Courtland) 5'6"
3. Shiontae Preston (James Monroe) 5'4"

Girls Pole Vault

Atwood reverses the order from the Region II Meet as both her and Pelton clear the height, but Atwood wins the jumpoff and gives Western Albemarle another state champion in the event to follow Early. Hlavin picks up key points for the Charlottesville team cause.

1. Ashley Atwood (Western Albemarle) 10'0"
2. Emma Pelton (Monticello) 10'0"
3. Callie Hlavin (Charlotesville" 9'6".

Girls Long Jump

Outside of White breaking her own two state meet records, Caroline's Kisha Garrick wins her third state title of the state meet to become the athlete of the meet. Heller challenges her all the way through the finals to push both over 18 feet for the first time.

1. Kisha Garrick (Caroline) 18'2"
2. Brooke Heller (Staunton River) 18'0"
3. Rashawnda James (Charlottesville) 17'2"

Girls Triple Jump

The only win for James of the meet, but ten points among many she will contribute individually with high finishes in her other events. Garrick continues her stellar day with a top three mark.

1. Rashawnda James (Charlottesville) 37'3"
2. Kristin Smith (Rustburg) 36'8"
3. Kisha Garrick (Caroline) 36'3"

Girls Shot Put

After throwing 39'11 at the FUMA Invite, Lewis has plateued without a performance better than 36'3". Meanwhile, Cummings has had some of her best throws as of late including her 39'3" season best at the district meet. Lewis should get a little bit of a surge to at least knock off Jones for second, who defeated her for the Region III title last Saturday.

1. Katie Cummings (Fort Defiance) 39'0"
2. Kayla Lewis (William Fleming) 36'5"
3. Kimberly Jones (Heritage) 36'0"

Team Predictions

Blacksburg simply has too much firepower for other teams to make an honest run at them. Charlottesville and William Fleming appear to be the next best in how they have their teams lined up for the state meet. Rashawnda James will be carrying a heavy burden of points for Charlottesville, while William Fleming has room for improvement out of their jumper Omni Ashford to pick up more points than projected. Courtland, Brentsville, and Caroline should be very close in the team scoring to round out the top 5.

1. Blacksburg 75
2. Charlottesville 50
3. William Fleming 48
4. Courtland 38
5. Brentsville 36
5. Caroline 36
