Tim Smith of Cave Spring (pictured left by Ted Plunkett) and Jane Gay of North Cross both posted the fastest reported 5K road race times this summer among Virginia high schoolers with their wins Saturday at the Commonwealth Games 5K in Roanoke. Smith, a rising senior for Cave Spring, had the top male time by 18 seconds in a final time of 15:43.7, which is only five seconds off his cross country 5K best of 15:38 from Footlocker South last November. Meanwhile, the defending Virginia Independent Schools Division II state cross country champion Gay, ran four seconds faster than her 5K cross country best of last fall of 18:47 with a 18:42.6 Commonwealth Games victory. There were other notable high school performances in the race as well as William Fleming's Jon Clark showed he has been putting in the summer miles with a 16:18 fifth overall finish. Pulaski County rising senior Sabrina Hall finished not far behind Gay as a runner-up to break 19 minutes for the first time in 18:50.
