The following individuals are automatic qualifiers for the first annual Virginia State Open, which is to be held next Saturday at Panorama Farms in Charlottesville, Virginia. This is the first time that Virginia will hold a meet to really determine the fastest high school cross country runners and best cross country teams in the state! The girls\' race starts at 11:30 and the boys\' race at noon. The individual qualifiers include the top 50 fastest times from the public school state meet (held at Great Meadows on November 8th) and the top 20 finishers from the private school championships (held at Woodberry Forest on October 31st). The top five individual boys and girls receive very nice Timex running watches. The Top 25 overall receive a special State Open t-shirt (long sleeve to the top 10). No entry fee wil be charged. Just a $5 per car parking fee. Because the event cannot be sanctioned by the VHSL (they cannont sanction any \"post\" season events for any sport!), the VHSL has stated that in cannot wear their school uniforms. Athletes must wear a different singlet or shirt from their normal uniform. Ten teams will receive a bid to The State Open (A, AA, AAA and Private School champions plus six \"at large\" teams). The at-large teams will be announced later tonight. These teams cannot participate under their normal school name but may do so as an athletic club. For example, Western Albemarle cannot participate as \"Western Albemarle\", but they may compete as the \"Western Athletic Club\". Because of the non-sanction status, coaches cannot transport individuals or \"intimately\" coach them on race day. There will be a team competition between the four \"divisions\". For example, the first five \"A\" boys across the finish line (no matter what school they\'re from) will score as the \"A\" team. This will allow us to see what division is the best. Each athlete will have a large color coded dot on their numbers to indicate which division they\'re from (i.e. Red dot for A, blue dot for AA, and so on). This is so spectators can tell. Next year, a Ragged Mountain Running Shop vendor will sponsor different color singlets to all the athletes (like Foot Locker Nationals).
