Last year's state meet beat up many of the state's best runners. One runner who probably got the worst of it was James River senior Kristen Wolfe. Wolfe was with the lead pack of runners coming down the final stretch inside the gate at Great Meadow with the finish line and a state cross country championship in sight. However, those hopes were quickly dashed as she collapsed with less than 200 meters to go. She may not have won the state title that day, but she certainly won over many fans and admirers as she fought and crawled her way to the finish in a minute and a half span after her fall. "I don't let states haunt me or scare me away. I just tell myself it wasn't my day. Those things happen and there is nothing I can do about it now," says Wolfe.
