Day 2 Recap
In the first events of the day Virginia made quick use of this quick track running all-american finishes in both the boys and girls 4x200s both out of the unseeded sections. Hampton's girls (pictured at the top of the page) finally were able to run a full relay and ran a very swift 1:39.54 to finish 3rd place despite not being in either of the top sections.
The boys' installment had indoor national champs Western Branch running a very swift 1:27.09 in heat 5/7 to finish fourth (pictured above by Jeff George).
Once again Virginia is ruling the sprint and hurdle relays down at New Balance Nationals. In the second final relays of the day Virginia placed three different teams inside All-American honors. The first of which was Oakton's 6th place girls SMR with a 4:04.06 time out of the unseeded section.
In the boys SMR defending champions Hermitage give it all they could, even with Devin Barnes splitting a 1:51, but fell just short finishing in 4th place with a time of 3:26.46. Stealing the show for Virginians though in this race was Chantilly anchored by Brandon McGorty who also split 1:51 and finished in third place with a time of 3:25.65.
The next relays on the track were the shuttle hurdle relays which once again Virginia dominated, well more specifically, Western Branch dominated by winning both the boys and girls races again. The girls though stole their teammates attention by running a 55.36 national record, breaking their own national record by nearly a second. The boys won in 56.91 which is top ten all-time just ahead of I.C. Norcom and Phoebus who garnered All-American honors as well.
All else aside, the real story of the day was Noah Lyles shocking everyone and running a 10.21 100m dash in the pouring rain. This performance not only won him the national title, his first outdoor title, but also broke the previous state record by .1 seconds! That time also sits at #13 all-time in the nation.
Next on the track after these very fast and wet sprints were the 2 Mile Championships. In the first of these races, Libby Davidson (sophomore-E.C. Glass) kicked it home big time to finish as the National Runner-up in the 2 Mile with a killer 10:24.67 time. This was a huge pr for her when it comes to her converted 3200 time which equates to a 10:21.05 and #9 all-time in the state of Virginia.
Though we had a super sophomore in the girls race, we had a super senior in the boys race with Lake Braddock's Alex Corbett. Running a great and strategic race led him to not only cross the line in 9:01.16 but also to finish in a national runner-up position. This was a big race for Alex and right at his pr. He definitely made his UVA Coaches proud as he will be heading to Charlottesville this fall.
Speaking of future Wahoos, Matthew Novak of Deep Run ran a stellar anchor in the final event of the day, the boys 4x800 to help his Wildcat teammates to a 7:45.75 4th place finish. This team ran a school record and an awesome race considered their third leg lost a shoe only 300m into the race! He held it together though and finished with a pr split to help them finish as All-Americans.
In the girls 4x800 we unfortunately saw a great winning streak end but they definitely went down fighting. Western Branch's Girls finished as the national runners-up with a 9:02.78 finish. This time retakes the Virginia lead for the season and is ten seconds off of their state record set a year ago. The good thing for Virginia though is that three legs return next year.
Probably the most drama filled events for Virginia this weekend were the hurdles where Funalyo Oluwole (13.52) and Charles Graham (13.71) both finished with 5th place All-American honors as seniors.
Grant Holloway, the indoor nationals champion, false started in the 110h final and thus was unable to run. Remember though that he is a junior and will be back better then ever next year.
In the emerging elite division a pair of Virginia sprinters crossed the line first with Destiny Ward winning the 200 (24.31) and Bernard Andoh also taking the 200 in 21.71. Ward hails from Oscar Smith while Andoh makes a longer trip down from Annandale just outside of DC.
Virginia didn't only have competitors on the track as we had some of our best athletes also competing in the field events both today and yesterday. Jayvon Jones of William Fleming was our only champion on the day. Jones was victorious in the boys triple jump going 43-7.25.
Also in the triple jump were three All-American finishers from Virginia. Our girl All-American was Henrico's LaChyna Roe who finished in 4th with a mark of 40-0.75. On the boys side Marcellus Fletcher (William Fleming) finished in 5th with his 49-5 and DaJuan Seward (Brunswick) finished in 6th with his 49-1 mark.
The final events going on this weekend are the multis featuring just two Virginians in the decathlon. The first of these competitors is Jack Claiborne of Woodberry Forest who is currently in 7th just outside of an All-American slot at 3285 points back 340 points from the lead. Even closer to him and a big athlete to watch tomorrow is Woodbridge's Isaac Agyemang who is currently second through five events with 3612 points just a mere 13 points off of the lead. One of his best events, the 110h, is tomorrow morning and should help him pick up a big lead. Both will also have the pole vault, discus, javelin, and 1500m run tomorrow.
All Americans from Day 2: Hampton Girls 4x200 (3rd place- 1:39.54), Western Branch Boys 4x200 (4th place - 1:27.09), Oakton's Girls SMR team finished in 6th out of the unseeded section (4:04.06), Both Hermitage and Chantilly in the Boys SMR going 3-4 with Chantilly taking the VA Crown, Western Branch's Girls SHR (1st- National Record 55.36), Western Branch' Boys SHR (1st- 56.91)
Final Qualifiers: Noah Lyles 10.69 to advance to 100m final, Funlayo Oluwole 13.74 to advance to 100h final, Grant Holloway (13.78) and Charles Graham (13.8) to advance to 110h final, Nansemond River runs the 6th fastest qualifying time in the girls 4x100 (46.75), Western Branch + Phoebus + Brooke Point all advance to 4x100 final.
