A total of seven US top ten performances were produced in day one event on Friday at the CNU Showcase in Newport News, Virginia led by a US #1 from the Westfield VA girls in the 4x800 meter relay of 9:22.90. Westfield had a 2:15 anchor leg split from Tasia Potasinski to pull away from Midlothian, who finished with a US #4 time of 9:33.03. The Landstown girls ran a US #1 on a flat track and US #3 overall in the 4x200 meter relay as their top legs of Cierra McGee and Marlena Wesh were able to pull their team ahead after a stiff challenge from Western Branch.
The Western Branch girls had a very successful first day at CNU as Jessie Gaines clocked in at a US #4 performance of 7.06 in the 55 meter dash finals, while Ermesha Fair leaped to a US #3 mark of 18-7.
The field events were rockin' at the Freeman Center as the fast section of the boys 4x800 meter relay had to take a backseat to the lone competitors left in the boys high jump and girls pole vault with Chris Copeland of Lakeland having three close misses at 6'10" in the high jump after clearing 6'6" and 6'8" on his first attempts, while Atlee junior Emma Dejarnette soared to her first clearance ever of 12 feet as she now ranks just outside of the top ten in the event currently.
The Eastern Region now has three girls ranked in the top ten nationally in the 55 meter hurdles as Grassfield junior Chantal Luedeke's 8.25 win in Friday's finals moves her to a US #7 position joining other Eastern Region hurdlers Charisse Bryant of Green Run (US #6 8.23) and Jessie Gaines of Western Branch (US #10 8.27) to be ranked among the nation's best.
