11 records set at River Ridge District Meet

A total of 11 meet records were set at the River District Meet held at Virginia Tech's banked 200 meter indoor track located in the Rector Fieldhouse on Monday evening including two set by Salem sophomore Scott Campbell (pictured above by Ted Plunkett), who scored 46 points in the meet alone in his individual events. Meanwhile, Blacksburg continued its dominance within the district with both boys and girls following up their sweep of the district titles in cross country.

River District Meet Complete Results

  • Scott Campbell of Salem took home two meet records in the 300 meter dash (37.19) and long jump (21'10") as well as another individual district title in the 55 meter dash with a 6.79 clocking. Campbell was also a district runner-up in the high jump (5'8") and triple jump (41'3.25") to score 46 points by himself.
  • Salem senior Ericka Claytor was equally as busy as she contributed nearly half of Salem's 64 team points as she won the 55 meter dash in a meet record time of 7.62, took the 300 meter dash in 43.21, and anchored her 4x100 meter relay team to a decisive win at 1:50.03.
  • Blacksburg's Peter Dorrell and Cave Spring's Tim Smith were both coming quickly off big weekends. Dorrell had competed in the Millrose Games high school mile race on Friday night in New York City, while Smith had set a school record in the 3200 meter run only two days prior to the district meet with a 9:20 performance at the Clash. The River Ridge District's two best distance runners went head to head in the 1600 meter run with Dorrell as the winner in 4:22.31 and Smith as runner-up in 4:25.18. Dorrell then went onto run a season best and meet record time of 2:33.58 in the 1000 meter run and anchor his 4x400 meter relay to a 3:36 win. Smith was not to be denied coming out of his senior district meet empy handed as he cruised to a 9:52.26 victory in the 3200 meter run.
  • The Blacksburg girls had an individual winner in every running event from 500 meters up with Avery Mattingly in the 500 (1:20.21), Kathleen Stevens in the 1000 (3:06.53), and Laurel MacMillan winning both the 1600 (5:14.80) and 3200 meter races with a meet record time of 11:27.20 in the 3200. Blacksburg teammate Trinity Foreman was a runner-up to MacMillan in both distance events with a 5:15.77 and 11:57.43 double.
  • Brittany Bostwick of Christiansburg and Pat Pollifrone of Salem had the best performances in the field events as both set meet records with Bostwick achieving a mark of 17'4" in the long jump, while Pollifrone bettered his own meet record from a year ago by nearly seven feet with a winning throw of 52'7".
