Miller jumps to three wins and two records at Montgomery

LANDOVER, MD -- Many Virginia teams took a trip north to the Prince George County's Sports & Learning Complex in Landover, Maryland to compete in the Montgomery Invitational. Colonial Forge senior Jerome Miller was the top meet performer as he took his high flying jumping act to the Maryland and Virginia competition found in the meet.

Miller won three jumping events on the day. In the high jump, Miller cleared a height of 6-10 to tie his season best, which also is the state's best mark as well. Miller nearly became the nation's first high jumper to clear 7 feet as he had two near clean clearances at the height, but had to settle with the meet record mark at 6-10. Miller set another meet record in the triple jump with a state best leap of 47-0. To complete a successful sweep of the jumping events, Miller's mark of 22-2 was good enough to win the long jump.

Jerome's twin brother, Jason, was not far behind in second place in both the high jump (6-8) and triple jump (44-10.75).

Virginia's top performers in the meet were definitely found in the field events between the Miller twins in the jumping events and Great Bridge junior Daniel Magness in the pole vault. Magness won the boys' pole vault with a meet record height of 14-7, which the clearance also gives the Great Bridge vaulter the state's best height of the season by six inches. Great Bridge nearly swept the top three places in the pole vault as Magness' teammates Michael Morrison (2nd, 13-6) and Dominic Hunter (4th, 13-0) both finished in the top four.

All-Americans in at last year's Nike Indoor Championships, the Thomas Jefferson boys' distance medley relay team appears to have a formidable team this year to perform just as well if not better after winning the event at the Montgomery Invitational in a swift time of 10:29.22 DMR. With a strong opening leg in Chris Mocko's 3:13 1200 meter split and even stronger anchor leg in Christo Landry's 4:18 1600 meter split, no team in the field was able to put up even a decent fight against this crew from Alexandria.

Last year's national champion in the mile indoors at the Nike Indoor Championships, Fauquier junior Sarah Bowman seems to be slowly working her way back into that top form that brought her so much success last year. Bowman won the mile, a Milrose Mile qualifier, in a state best time of 5:11.66 (5:10.06 1600m conversion). Bowman also competed in the high jump, where she finished third in the event at a height of 5-4. Herndon's Heather Fisher was not too far behind Bowman at the finish as she took runner-up honors in the race with a time of 5:13.09. Possibly another star on the horizon, The Potomac School freshmen Michaeline Nelson finished third overall in a time of 5:17.11.

In the boys mile, the race was won by Andrew Jesien of Walter Johnson (MD), but Virginia had a good showing with Herndon senior Shane Young (4:25.66) and Woodside junior Derrick Robbins (4:28.54) finishing second and third respectively as Young's converted 1600 meter time (4:24.06) is the state's best on the season.

Morgan Phelan was impressive in her win in the 3200 meter run as the Hayfield junior clocked a winning time of 11:38.04

In the boys' 4x200 meter relay, I.C. Norcom finished fourth overall in the event, but walked away with the state's fastest clocking on the season with their final time of 1:34.64. In the boys' 55 meter hurdles, 4x200 meter relay member Avery Wilson finished third (7.80) in a very competitive finals.

Warwick senior Tona Amatu posted a swift 800 meter time indoors at Prince George with his third place finishing time of 1:57.05.

James Monroe junior Shylan Bumbrey dipped under a minute in the open 400 meter run as she finished third overall in the event with a 59.59 clocking.

Tishiki Ferguson of Woodbridge put forth a respectable performance in the girls' triple as she took runner-up honors in the event with a leap of 35-11.75.

Potomac Senior's Kharya Brown finished second overall in the girls' 55 meter dash in a photo finish as Brown and Largo's (MD) Michaylin Golladay both were clocked at 7.27, but Golladay was just ahead by a mere thousandths of a second.

In another close finish, Gar-Field (8:24.63) was just able to edge out Colonial Forge (8:24.83) in the boys' 4x800 meter relay.

The Washington-Lee girls had no such problems in taking the win with ease in the girls' 4x800 meter relay with their time of 9:55.73.
