Kate Murphy & Lake Braddock Girls Roll In Final Tuneup Before Championship Season

The recent University of Oregon commit Kate Murphy and the nationally ranked Lake Braddock girls rolled in their final tuneup before championship season at the Frank Keyser Invitational.

Racing against Maryland state champion and 2015 Foot Locker finalist Maria Coffin of Annapolis, Murphy had competition early in the race from Coffin as well as Catoctin's Julien Webster. However, the reigning Virginia 6A state cross country champion was able to pull away in the last half of the race for a 14 second margin of victory over Coffin in a meet and course record time of 16:56. Next for Murphy will seeing how high she can finish on the Burke Lake Park all-time course list at her conference and regional races on the historic 2.98 mile course.

The Lake Braddock girls proved to be decisive team winners at the Frank Keyser Invite racing against two Maryland state title contenders in River Hill and Walter Johnson. Lake Braddock had 5 girls among the top 12 places and 6 girls under 19 minutes on the challenging 3 mile course at Boonsboro High School. Their #5 runner Emily Schiesl in 10th place finished just ahead of a sub 19 minute runner in Jasmine Tiamfook of River Hill to show how strong this year's Lake Braddock squad truly is.

The Lake Braddock boys made it a clean team sweep of the afternoon large school varsity division tallying 47 points led by race runner-up Conor Lyons in a time of 15:27. Lyons was joined by teammates Tyler Lawson (6th, 15:53), Andrew Delvecchio (8th, 16:01), and Edward Cerne (10th, 16:07).

In the morning small school races, the John Handley girls took the team title with two top 3 finishers in Kristin Blake (2nd, 18:58) and Kenzi Fergus (3rd, 18:59) helping their team effort and outcome.
