The senior already has two state titles under his belt from last year's outdoor state championships and is the overwhelming favorite for this year's 4A state cross country championship. He has gone undefeated this season against in-state competition, his only loss so far this season coming against Millbrook's Alec Schrank at the Glory Days Grill Invitational.
Asfaw turned in the fastest time by any Maryland runner in 2015 when he finished sixth at the Nike Cross Southeast Regionals; he clocked a personal-best 15:21.10 5K and narrowly missed a trip to Nike Cross Nationals. Asfaw also put his name on the national map last season when he set the New Balance Indoor Nationals Emerging Elite two mile record in 9:11.08.
In addition to his 5K and two mile personal bests, Asfaw has also shown his range by clocking a sub-4:20 1600 last season and winning the state championship in the event last outdoor season. In joining the University of Virginia Asfaw will get a chance to join another Montgomery County great, Chase Weaverling, and match up against his friendly former rival Jack Wavering at Virginia Tech (formerly of Good Counsel).
