NIC Highlights: Sunday

LANDOVER, MD -- Woodrow Wilson's Lashawn Merritt wins two national titles with victories in 200 (21.73) and 400 (47.88). The Maggie Walker boys' 4x800 fell just short of a national title by a mere .07 as anchor leg Daniel Howard was just edged out at the end for an exciting finish with their time of 7:54.27 (Carmel HS of Indiana won in 7:54.20). Albemarle senior Hari Mix made up for missing out on qualifying for Foot Locker Nationals in cross country, by earning All-American honors in the two mile with a 3rd place finishing time of 9:11.30. Two Virginia girls earned All-American honors in the two mile as juniors Amanda Patterson of Midlothian (3rd, 10:45.08) and Melissa Dewey of Hayfield (6th, 10:53) finished strong among several Foot Locker finalists. Another pair of All-American girls came out of the 800 meter run with juniors Tasmin Fanning of Western Albemarle (4th, 2:15.39) and Shylan Bumbrey of James Monroe (5th, 2:15.98). Bumbrey earned All-American honors winning out of a slower heat. Natalie Sherbak earns All-American honors individually after receiving the honor the day before on her relay team with a 6th place finish in the mile (4:56.59). Thomas Dale junior Dennis Boone earned All-American once again in the long jump with a 4th place finishing mark of 23-2. Tallwood senior Faraign Giles repeated her All-American performance from a year ago in the 400 meter dash with a 5th place finishing time of 58.10.
