NIC Photos by John Herzog - Maggie Walker Boys 4x800m Relay

Photos of the exciting and disheartening second place finish by the Maggie Walker boys in the 4x800 meter relay.

Not much separation among the leadoff legs early on in the 4x800 meter relay at NIC. Maggie Walker senior Rohan Patel is stuck right in the middle of this pack as the Green Dragons' first leg. Patel making a move to better Maggie Walker's position in the race.
With a 2:00.7 split, Patel hands off to fellow senior Andrew Stegmaier with Maggie Walker in second place and trailing behind St. Anthony's. Stegmaier trying to maintain Maggie Walker's position as he enters into the curve.
St. Anthony's contines to lead as the relays enter into their third legs, while Maggie Walker junior Brandon Herzog waits anxiously for the handoff from Stegmaier. Herzog takes the baton with Maggie Walker in fifth place and a good distance behind the leaders from St. Anthony. Stegmaier split a 2:02.6 for the second leg.
Herzog runs like an animal on the third leg as he passes four runners in the process to put Maggie Walker in the lead. Herzog gives AAA 1600 meter state champion Daniel Howard the baton after a stellar 1:56 third leg.
Running strong on anchor Howard enters the bell lap while being chased closely by the Carmel HS (Indiana) anchor leg. Only a few strides from the line, both anchor legs start to break down after fighting each other off the whole 800 meters as both Howard and the Carmel HS anchor start to collapse toward the finish line.
The two anchor legs plunge towards to finish line in an unusual and exciting finish. In a freak finish, both anchor legs are physically drained as they collapse to the track. The finish was so close no one truly knew the winner until the finsh camera was able to make the right call. Howard did all he could with a personal best 800 meter split of 1:55.
The boys from Indiana were declared the winners with a time of 7:54.20. Meanwhile, the boys from the Virginia state capitol finished a disheartening close, yet impressive second place with a final time of 7:54.27.
