Jacobus Smit wins the javelin with a throw of 223-5
Chapel Hill, N.C. - The Virginia Tech men's and women's track and field teams kicked off the outdoor portion of its season at today's Tar Heel Opener. The meet saw a limited number of Hokies compete in the low-key early season event.Headlining the competition on the men's side was sophomore Jacobus Smit who won the javelin with a toss of 223-5, qualifying him for NCAA Regional competition. The pole vaulters also made an impressive opening with three Hokies clearing 15 feet. Brian Mondschein finished second in the event with a height of 15-11. Ryan Gore also cleared 15-11, finishing third on the judge's descision while Dan Shipman was fourth with a mark of 15-5. In the men's 800 meters, Antoine Harris and Alex Johnson finished four-five with times of 1:55.60 and 1:55.72, respectively.
The women's 800 meters saw two Hokies finish fifth and six as Heather Mullis came in fifth with a time of 2:19.37, followed by Meredith Brooks in sixth at 2:20.25. Meanwhile, Moriah O'Brien was fifth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:51.26. Samantha Ference was also fifth in the 3,000 meters at 10:27.17.
The Hokies continue their outdoor season next weekend at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C.
