Manchester girls set two meet records at home invite

CHESTERFIELD, VA -- Coming off a strong indoor season for the Manchester girls' sprint relay teams, which saw their 4x200 meter relay squad take state runner-up honors with a time of 1:42.87, the Lady Lancers wasted no time in establishing the supremacy of their relay teams in this young outdoor season. At the Manchester Relays, held at Manchester High School's very own outdoor track facility, the Lady Lancers set two impressive meet records.

The group of Carmenta Mitchell, Shaunte Cotton, Alaina Hite, and Kelly Keener had a sensational day on their home track. In the 1600 meter sprint medley relay, the Manchester girls pulled out the win and a new meet record with a 4:13.02 clocking. Later in the meet, the Lady Lancers would notch another meet record win in the 4x100 meter relay with the same four athletes in a 49.14 clocking.

The team that notched the most wins on the day belonged to Hermitage with nine victories in the 28 varsity events. Hermitage dominated the field events with wins in the boys' long jump, girls' high jump, boys' high jump, boys' shot put, girls' shot put, and boys' discus. For all individual events including the running and field events, the top two performers from each school had their performances or times combined for one final team performance. In the boys' throwing events, the tandem of Andrew Bowman and Trae Kenney combined together to win both the shot put and discus. Likewise, Tim Johnson and Griff Yanley notched double wins together in the high jump and long jump. Andrew Bowman's younger brother, Alex anchored the winning Hermitage 1600 meter sprint medley team to a time of 3:39.36. Hermitage also garnered wins in the boys' 4x100 meter relay (43.67) and girls' 300 meter hurdles with the pair of Queen Harrison and Miranda Means for a combined time of 1:40.08.

Maggie Walker looked strong in the distance relays with wins in both the boys and girls' distance medley relay. The girls' squad of Emily Wauford, Stella Askin, Esther Erb, and Ritchie Vaughan won the event with a time of 12:54.29. Meanwhile, NIC 4x800 meter relay national runner-up members Rohan Patel, Brandon Herzog, and Daniel Howard joined with Brian Glover to win the distance medley on the boys' side in a time of 10:49.66.
