From Good to Great: MC Heinen's Rise To The Top

Maggie Walker's Mary Carolinen (MC) Heinen began her sophomore season in a big way. She ran one of the fastest splits at the RVA Relays in XC and never looked back. She went on to win a 2A State XC title and then multiple titles indoors.

This past weekend at Dogwood though she elevated her game even more and arguably went from being very good to great. She did so by winning the 1600 and 3200 in some very fast state leading times.

Her 1600 was up first where she positioned herself well and kicked it into gear late. She powered down the stretch to not only break five minutes for the first time but to run VA #25 all-time 4:51.58. That time also ranks third in the entire nation for sophomores.

She came back soon after that and once again pulled away late for the win in the 3200m run. That win was a VA #1 10:44, her seventh win in that event this year, and an 11 second PR.

Both of these performances are very impressive but together they make something very special for this Jim Holdren coached athlete. It really gets you asking what is she capable of this season and the following two years. She is not only fast but also tough as a nail. She is a competition thru and thru and that is why after this weekend she went from being a state star to a national star in track & field.
