Steve Huntzinger was the most dominant thrower in Virginia this past decade. Huntzinger won a total of five Group AAA state titles in the shot put (3 outdoor, 2 indoor) and two titles in the discus. He was not afraid to leave Virginia to face stiffer competition as he traveled twice to compete at the Arcadia Invitational in California including his senior year in 2003 when he won the shot put and finished third in the discus with high school bests of 64'1" in the shot and 188'3" in the discus. Both marks are the #1 performances by a Virginia high school athlete in each event this past decade.
The 2003 graduate of James Robinson High School in Fairfax, Huntzinger was a three-time high school All-American including a national runner-up in the shot put at the Nike Indoor Classic as a senior. He threw over 60 feet in more than a dozen meets in high school and a consistent performer in the discus as a senior with all of his marks over 170 feet and two marks over 180 feet.
