Day 1 - Tuesday, July 28th

Ashlen Veatch, a freshmen from Cave Spring High School finished as a runner-up in the intermediate girls hammer throw with a best mark of 148'6". Veatch, who did not compete on the school team this year, was just over a foot behind the winner Daina Levy in an event which is not contested in Virginia.

 

Another Roanoke area athlete also competed in the first day at the USATF National Junior Olympics as Salem's Scott Campbell completed day one of two in the young men's decathlon. Campbell scored 725 points in the 100 meter dash (5th, 11.63), 661 points in the long jump (3rd, 20'9.75"), 472 points in the shot put (16th, 472 pts), 544 points in the high jump (13th, 5'7"), and 693 points in the 400 meter dash (7th, 52.73).

 

Day 2 - Wednesday, July 29th

Scott Campbell fell a few spots in the overall standings in the final day of the young men's decathlon to finish in 12th overall in final results. The rising senior at Salem High School amassed a total of 5576 points.

 

Aleiza Higgins, a high school racewalker from Williamsburg, Virginia earned All-American honors in the 3000 meter racewalk for the intermediate girls in a time of 18:25.42.

 

Day 3 - Thursday, July 30th

Woodberry Forest's Kevin Bennert, who expects to be one of the top runners for one of the team favorites to win the private school state title this fall, won the slower section of the intermediate boys 3K and ended up placing in the top 6 with his time of 9:03.18 to earn All-American honors in fourth place.

 

A Norfolk Real Deal Track club relay in the intermediate boys 4x400 including a quartet of Eastern Region sprinters won their preliminary heat to advance onto the finals with a time of 3:22.16 including Joel Coleman and Joseph Hill of King's Fork, Walter Mitchell of Salem, and Justin Burke of First Colonial.

 

A couple of athletes were just off from earning All-American honors in the field events. Group AAA state indoor shot put champion Isaiah Simmons of Woodbridge placed 7th in the young men's shot put with a mark of 57'8.50" and two inches away from a sixth place All-American finish. Thomas Dale rising junior Siobhan Ford-Holland placed 9th in the intermediate girls' triple jump with a mark of 36'9.50".

 

Day 4 - Friday, July 31st

A pair of Central Region female athletes came through with stellar performances in the field events. Two-time Group AAA state indoor triple jump champion Jasia Richardson, who recently finished up her high school career at J.R. Tucker and is headed to Radford University in the fall, was a USATF JO national runner-up in the triple jump with a personal best mark of 40'5".

 

Stephanie Oleson, an All-State pole vaulter at Henrico High School, can now add the title of All-American to her honors as the rising junior placed third in the intermediate girls division with a clearance of 10'6".

 

Isaiah Simmons had to settle for another painful seventh place finish in the throws as he followed up being one spot away from All-American status in the shot put on Thursday with another seventh place finish on Friday in the discus. Simmons threw for a best mark of 165'1", which is a personal best for the rising junior at Woodbridge High School by three feet.

 

Day 5 - Saturday, August 1st

Vincent Brown of South Lakes won his heat of the young men's 110 meter hurdles in a 14.40 clocking to advance onto Sunday's finals. Brown is the state leader in the event from his 13.91 win at the USATF regional meet.
