Albemarle's Brown, Lakeland boys impressive at FUMA

FORK UNION, VA -- While distance stars like Alex Tatu, Kippy Keino, and Daniel Kane branched out into other events Tuesday night, Albemarle's Roger Brown raced to a classy 6.59 (f.a.t.) 55 and the Lakeland's boys dominated the relays and long sprints.

Vincent Pugh's Lakeland Cavaliers took wins in the 4x200, 4x400, 500, 300 and had good performances in the dash, hurdles, and jumps. The meet concluded two weeks of outstanding early season track & field which brought nearly thirty teams to the Estes Athletic Center at Fork Union Military Academy.

Perhaps the performance of the night belonged to Thomas Dale's Alex Tatu. The AAA State Cross Country Champion ran a 1:59 split on the 4x800 and returned to easily win the 1000 in a classy time of 2:33. North Stafford's Stacey Durham picked a pair of jump wins in the long and triple going 20'7 and 44'1.5" both outstanding marks. The high jump was the night's most competitive event as six athletes went over 5'10 with Tucker's Holmes getting the win at 6'2. Yet another great early season performance was DeAndre White's 7.70(f.a.t.) in the high hurdles.

The highlight of the girls' competition was the triple jump where Western Albemarle's Michelle Gardner edged Charlottesville's Joyce Johnson 36'9.5 to 36'6.5.

The girls' 1000 saw a highly competitive race between Delaney Moje and E.C. Glass' Mayer. Mayer picked up the win 3:17.5 to 3:17.8.
