Gaudrault & Bassett Win Individual titles, Greely Sweeps Team Titles
As she has done in just about every race this year Cape Elizabeth junior Lila Gaudrault found herself running alone at the Southern Maine Class B Regional at Twin Brook on Saturday.
"I just wanted to go out hard and push myself the whole way." the junior told us after the race.
Gaudrault's approach worked as she has the ability to push herself out of her comfort level, and she really enjoys running at Twin Brook.
"It's my favorite course."
Gaudrault's winning time of 19:12.40 was a twenty second course personal best, and gives her confidence heading into the state meet next week on the same.
The defending Class B champion says "I'm looking forward to running faster." when asked about next week's state meet.
Behind Gaudrault there was a great race between freshman Charlotte DeGeorge of Cape Elizabeth and Marin Provencher of Greely as they two battled back and forth. In the end DeGeorge pulled away clocking 19:52.90, while Provencher secured the third stick for her team.
Wells junior Katie Pinette scored a fourth place finish and she was followed across the line by Fryeburg Academy sophomore Alana Nataluk. Next came senior Olivia Ouellette of Poland in sixth.
Freshman Abby Hollis and Charlotte Taylor of Greely ran great and came down the homstretch side by side and decided to grasp hands as they crossed the finish line. This caused a bit of controversy but thankful a rule that forbid the act (It cost the Massabesic girls a state title in 2007) is now a discretionary ruling. Since the athletes didn't impede any of runners, and didn't gain an advantage they were safe.
Sydney Fogg of York placed ninth, while Jane Dawson of Freeport rounded out the top ten finishers.
Greely behind three finishers in the top seven cruised to the regional team title with 62 points as the Rangers averaged 21:16.50.
The Wildcats of York earned the runner-plaque as they totaled 92 points to edge Cape Elizabeth by two points.

Cape Elizabeth senior Jack Bassett & Wells senior Griffin Allaire came into the Southern Maine Class B Regional championship having matched up two consecutive weeks, each time with Bassett pulling away in the end. This week KVAC Class B champion Jarrett Gulden joined the mix making it a great three way battle.
And battle they did.
Gulden set the pace through the first mile with a short gap back to Bassett & Allaire. At the two mile mark the trio was dead even with Bassett setting the pace.
Bassett used his strong to pull away in the final meters from Gulden to secure the win in 16:39.77 to Gulden 16:42.04.
"I just like to sit and kick." Bassett said of his strategy. "I just went for the last .1 miles, and try to haul and it worked out."
Allaire faded a bit in the final mile but still finished a strong third in 16:51. The Greely duo of Sam Wilson & Riley Franklin were next as they secure two low sticks for the Rangers.
York's Eli Hultstrom finished sixth, he was followed across the line by Josiah Martin of Lincoln Academy. Next came junior Martin Horne of Freeport last year's regional champion, while Greely's Elias Leggat-Barr ran a great race for ninth. Rounding of the top ten was senior Odeh Rizkallah of Yarmouth.
Greely on its home course upset York 64-67 behind four runners in the top twelve despite the Wildcats placing seven runners in front of the Rangers 5th runner. The two teams will do battle again next week.
Lincoln Academy finished third with 94 while Cape Elizabeth was fourth with 107 points.
