9/19 Weekend Preview

Brentsville Relays

September 19, 2009 @ Brentsville HS in Nokesville, VA

Hosted by Brentsville District

The bigger story of the meet going in is the teams who will not be able to compete due to the Jewish and Muslim holidays coinciding with the meet, which is a week later than traditionally scheduled. A debate on the topic and issue in relation to Loudoun County schools not being allowed to compete is found on the message board. More in-depth preview once we review a full list of teams competing.

William & Mary Invitational

September 19, 2009 @ Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg, VA

Hosted by College of William & Mary     Official Meet Web Site

Grassfield boys will be competing for the first time as the #1 ranked team in Group AAA after their resounding victory over previous #1 Western Branch. Western Branch will also be at William & Mary and looking to even the score with their Southeastern District rival. Western Branch's top runner Blake Theroux (Group AAA #1 ranked) will be facing off against the #1 ranked runner in the state in Colin Mearns of Jamestown on his home (but new and modified) course. The original William & Mary Invite course has been drastically altered and has been advertised as a 5K course, which the old course was short of a 5K at a distance of 3.05 miles.

The Maggie Walker girls look to dominate for the second week in a row on the Peninsula after rolling through the competition last weekend at Newport News Park. Maggie Walker is ranked #2 in Group AAA and will have one of the individual favorites in Clarrisa Schick, who posted a 5K personal best of 18:42 last week. Other top individuals include Region I champion Heidi Peterson of Lafayette, Region III favorite Leigha Schimmoeller of Jefferson Forest, and AAU 1500 national champ Lizzie Cornell of Princess Anne.

Woodberry Forest Invitational

September 19, 2009 @ Woodberry Forest 5K Course in Woodberry Forest, VA

Hosted by Woodberry Forest     Official Meet Web Site

Many private schools throughout the state will be headed to Woodberry Forest this weekend to preview the VISAA State Championship course for November. This meet always gives a better read on how those teams and individuals match up in a rare encounter since most schools stay in their area competing against their local conference teams. There will be no Bishop O'Connell girls at Woodberry Forest, but the St. Catherine's girls still have an opportunity to show themselves as a legitimate challenger if they were to win the Woodberry Forest Invite and in a statement making fashion.

Brooke Point's Katherine Walker may be the top individual in the girls race after a sub 12 minute split on her 2 mile leg at the Potomac River Running Relay Kick-Off two weeks ago.

Woodberry Forest's Kevin Bennert has been the lone brightspot for a disappointing start to the 2009 cross country season for the defending VISAA Division I state cross country champions with high expectations coming into this fall. While his team has underperformed so far, Bennert has been competing a high level and mixing it up with some of the best runners in the state. Bennert will be racing in the lead group with Fork Union's front two Josh Morris and Wojciech Czernek. Cznerk was a runner-up at last week's Fork Union Invitational with a 15:18 3 mile performance.

The boys' team battle should be fairly wide open without an highly ranked squads in the field.
