While the Blacksburg boys have gained respect within the state of Virginia this fall as the top ranked team in the state. The respect in the region and national level appears to be lacking. They look to their upcoming race at Maymont to get more attention. Many of the experts have neglected to look at Blacksburg’s sixth place finish in the 2008 Nike Cross Southeast Regional in Cary and only 44 points away from 2nd place with only graduation loss.
It has only been used as extra motivation though for last year’s Group AA state runners-up to mow through the courses and competition this season. At the Great Meadow Invitational, Blacksburg dominated several of the top ranked Group AAA schools including put their entire top five ahead of Group AAA state title contender Mountain View’s first finisher. At Knights Crossing Invite two weeks ago, Blacksburg also made easy work of the top ranked team from Tennessee, Morristown-West, who will also be racing at Maymont this weekend.
