Sherbak VIRGINIA BEACH, VA -- In 1979 Kendall Tata of Kempsville High School won the inaugural VHSL AAA State cross-country Championship propelling her team to the team championship. Later that year she went on to break the five-minute barrier, repeat as the 3200m Run State Champion, and establish herself as one of the best high school girl distance runners in the state of Virginia. She led her team to the state championship; a team loaded with talent seemingly teeming with new state champions. Years passed, Kempsville won more and more eastern region Girls cross-country titles, yet no individual girl from the Eastern Region, let alone the Beach District, won the coveted individual title. The 80's came to a close and Kempsville's dominance was finally snapped as other region schools sent their fastest to conquer the hills and teams of Northern Virginia in Cross Country and Track and Field.
